- Competition names: Roger Tallentire gave an update on the trophies and remind us that it had been agreed to bring the names of some of the competitions more up to date. After some discussion it was agreed that individual names of past or present members was not the best way forward. It was agreed that a different method be adopted. Roger had produced a sheet listing current names and suggestions; he suggested that committee members forward suggestions to him as soon as possible, but that it should have some coherent theme to it. This was agreed by the committee.
- Guest day: The forthcoming guest was discussed. It was felt that it had not been best advertised as to what to expect to best advantage. In future the secretary to notify the captain of the dates well in advance so he can organize the event. After an initial enquiry from Gordon Allen as to the expected numbers involved, Chris Vander had worked on this and around 60 people would be playing and attending the prize giving. The day will consist of tea/coffee on arrival in the morning and lunch consisting of Roast Chicken and vegetables, followed by a desert of Apple crumble and custard. Smart casual to be required for lunch. Tables of eight be provided where possible. The cost £20 for members and £35 for guests will include prizes. Warley Park members to play off 85% of club handicap.
- Future Captain`s funding: Discussion took place regarding financial help for future captains, as result of the arrangement of a free year's membership with Get Golfing having ended. It was noted that as a one off the present Captain had received support for approx half of the membership fee from GG as they had made a late decision. There was discussion on an increase of £1 for senior's competition's to help fund any excessive captain's expenditure for future years. The treasurer thought it best if he took control with a one off payment if necessary of up to £550. This would cover the position of next year`s captain. It was made clear this should only cover seniors competitions, social or handicap. The treasurer to make a projected costing for future year`s explaining the benefits to the section and put it before the AGM. This was agreed.
- AOB: A suggestion had been received regarding GOY competition entry and high handicappers, suggesting they only be allowed to win if they had successfully entered the required 20 cards for counting purposes. After some discussion it was decided to leave everything as it is, any member eligible to enter may do so and win, regardless of how many counting cards have been recorded.
Minutes of the Warley Park Seniors Committee held on Wednesday 25th January 2023.
Present: SA (Chair) ; AP; RW; KS; MT
In Attendance : GA
Apologies: BF; GR; RT;
There was no formal agenda, the meeting having been called primarily, at the AGMs request, to review the issue of entries to ‘Senior Major Competitions”.
It was agreed that the following further items referred to the committee would be considered.
A) Entry eligibility to Seniors Major Competitions.
It was noted that the current position for eligibility is set out on the Seniors website. That says that all entrants should be active members of the Seniors section, and have played in in at least 3 Seniors activities, non-major competitions, swindles etc before they can enter any of the following Major Competitions:
a. the 10 GOYs,
b. the Seniors Championship,
c the Summer Knockouts
After reviewing the many issues surrounding this matter the Committee concluded the following:
The Seniors Section is effectively recognised by GG as the representative group for Seniors ie males over 55.
It does this through providing free membership to the Captain during his year of appointment. Also through a parking place etc.
We also benefit from access to and use of the IG system for managing competitions.
Importantly we also have representatives on the Club Committees and so can influence (or try to at least) better outcomes for seniors.
In supporting our section there is tacit agreement that the Seniors section organise some events on behalf of ALL seniors in the club.
On that basis any Male Club Member who is age 55 or over, who pays their entry fee, are legitimately eligible to enter all the all the major competitions listed above.
An additional small condition will be applied in the case of the Seniors Championship i.e. that no entrant can win more than one cash prize.
We can, however, and will, continue to restrict access to all other events we organise to those who are Senior Section Members i.e.
1 Seniors who agree to provide their name, email address and phone number to be entered onto our Contact database
2 Seniors who participate in one, or more, of the activities we offer access to within the section.
The website and the competition entry conditions will be adjusted to reflect these arrangements.
B) Better Recognition of Medal - Stroke Play Results. (To encourage and recognise the performance of lower HC golfers).
As a result of reviewing this matter the Committee concluded :
That a new overall Medal competition outcome, using the results from existing competitions, should be established for 2023.
This will be similar to the GOY Winner and Overall 4 Seasons Winner, but will be based on the 5 medal competitions played, namely 4 of the GOYs and the Seniors Championship.
The overall Medal Champion will be determined by taking the lowest aggregated stroke score from the best 4 of the 5 competitions. In effect there will be no requirement for any additional competition.
C) Scope for Additional Fun Day and Captain’s Charity raising Days.
The Captain referred to the current practice during December of running fun-charity days and asked that options for this to be extended be reviewed by the Swindle Organisers.
It was suggested that there could be scope to do that more regularly during the year (it had been done previously) and that would be considered.
