Senior Captain's Drive-In and Jack Wisbey Cup
held on Monday 21st January 2019
The golf swing in the pictures above looks pretty good for someone who has played hockey all his life. Who said hockey players have short back swings!! I am sure we all wish Kim good luck for the year. I have a feeling that the Captain’s curse might not have a big effect this year - after all he has Captained England.
The January weather proved to be cold, but fine, for the Senior Captain's big Drive-In day and Jack Wisbey Cup competition. Rather different from 2018 - played in March and over 9 holes only because of poor weather!

The Jack Wisbey Cup
The Jack Wisbey Cup was keenly competed by around 40 players, but the overall winner, our very own Bandit with a Yo Yo handicap, Dennis O’Neill, was a long way out in front with a staggeringly good 46 points, some 8 points clear of his nearest competitors. We now know that Dennis has been cut to 14 so we are sure he’ll enjoy that! Ash Patel took second place from Brian Wilkins with a BB9 having both got 38 points. Dennis and Ash also won the prizes for the below 18 handicap category.
The 18 plus category winners were Martin Goode with 36 points and Doug Garvey with 35 points. Well done to those guys. There were also prizes for:
Longest Drive (13th) David Skeels Nearest the pin (18th) Graham Sharp Nearest the pin (3rd) Simon Hughes
For the first time we ran a 9 hole competition alongside the Cup competition for our elder statesmen seniors and congratulations go to Colin Anthony who took the prize with a score of 17 or 18 points depending on whether Colin or the Terminal won the battle of points! Very well done Colin and good to see participation on the day extended.
The winning players are shown in the photos (taken by our resident photographer Rex). A full set of the Jack Wisbey results can be found on the Results 2019 page. |
Drive -In Charity Fund
You will all be pleased to hear that Senior Captain Kim successfully cleared the ditch on the 1st - oh, and he drove his ball 45 yards past the bridge. Someone said it was a record distance for a new senior Captain and it wasn’t Kim! Seriously, we were impressed Kim.
13 members chose this distance and were joint winners sharing a prize fund of £325.00.
Monica Fox, Dave Cormack, Peter Crutchett, Pat Martin, Neil Gennings, Bob Doe, Lorna Cooke, Colin Brown, Will Gilley, Chris Skeggs, Seniors Spot Syndicate, Kevin Price and Tony Dunston.
The Seniors Captain would like to thank all those who have generously contributed to his Drive – In Fund to the tune of £326 which will go to The Essex and Herts Air Ambulance Service.
The Captain’s thanks go also to his Vice Captain, Steve Abbott, for his excellent work on the Drive – In Boards.
