Ash's Days Out
2021 : Special Away Day to Visit Old Friends at Burnham on Crouch 20th October 2021
Having kept an eye on the weather forecast for a few days I was quite confident that it would be dry from tee off to early evening. That proved to be the case, but rain did fall on us for a few minutes late morning from the blue skies above. It was a mystery, but I deduced that it was coming from a dark cloud in the distance and gale force winds carried it over to Burnham golf course.
At the start of the day we acquainted ourselves with old golfing friends whilst the coffee and bacon rolls went down a treat. James Smythe had already prepared all the cards and gave us a few wise words before we all set off to play golf.
Considering the overnight rain, the fairways were dry and the greens in good nick, but a little slow. There were wide open spaces so you could not get into trouble (unless your name is Ash). Finding himself in the trees on the 12th there was a small gap to get through to the green, however, the ball ricocheted off a tree and shot Captain Dave Datsun in the heart. Luckily he is still alive to finish off his year as captain (Eds Note: Although Ash didn't hear David's later telephone conversation with his insurance agent!
20 of the 27 players scored 30 or above so that was pretty good going in tough, very windy, conditions. The winners all had the same score so had to be separated using b9 scores.
James did the presentations whilst an excellent lunch was devoured.
1st was the newly crowned 'Communications Officer' Gordon Allen 37pts (b9 20pts)
Taking home the princely sum of £30. He can buy himself a telephone now to do that communication job of his.
2nd - Stan Tillet 37pts (b9 18pts) He can buy plenty of bananas and mars bars with his £20
3rd - John Powell 37pts (b9 13pts) took home £10.
Sharp shooter (no he wasn't there) of the day was ex Detective Sergeant Tallentire. He brought his gun with him and hit bullseye on the 11th and 18th (in 2) to win some of the Prosecco he supplied to me.
NP on the 5th was won by Kevin Price who had joined us from Stoke by Nayland.
Our thanks go to the Burnham boys, Doug, Bob, Paul and James (Ed. no Paul hasty been split up) in making us feel welcome and providing additional prizes.
