SWINDLER of the YEAR 2021
Note : The current swindle 'rules' are set out on the separate page under the Swindle 2021 tab, with further pages on the weekly players list and daily results.
- Final Swindle Table for Jan - Nov 2021 Season
First the Winners - Well done to Robbo on another highly successful Swindle year winning by some margin over Ash in 2nd place (Ash being a previous multi-year winner as well). Excellent consistent golf guys.
Although Tim actually had more winnings than Ash, he hadn’t had time to play the required 15 games so didn’t come within the rules to take 2nd place. Watch for him next year.
We started the year with 50 players on the list.
4 players either didn’t get around to, or couldn't play.
51 played actually at one time or another.
10 players left us for new pastures, but we had a good influx of new players and at the end of our season ended up with 45 still active, although the core group is around 35.
But still very healthy.
Not bothered to count how many swindles were actually played, but more than 51 and of course we didn’t start until April this year. 848 individual cards and thus £1s in the kitty which were paid out in the winnings.
Only 21 managed the minimum 15 games to be eligible to become the Swindler of the Year.
And only Dennis got to 50+games, with Robbo the nearest to him, with 40.
The average points score across all game was 30 points - about the norm.
A few had a high average, but that was due to only having played very few games, and thus not having suffered regular Swindle HC cuts, or (lets be honest) having slightly inflated handicaps for their actual golf capability. (Not taking about you Dennis!)
But an average of 33 across Robbo’s 40 games is, as usual, pretty stand out.
Its clear though that some of the newer guys (Tim, John, Mark, Kevin etc) will be formidable challengers, even when their HCs settle, so the future for competition looks good.
Dennis somehow managed to get 5 x 40 point scores (last one earning him a rather manly HC cut, although he lost £5 overall for the year (and a box of balls to me as I had higher scores in the majority of games - although I only had 3 x40 pointers, but was £10 up). The Gor-Den challenge for next year could be highlight!
As you know one of the main objectives in the Swindle is to share out the proceeds without too big a difference in the high to low points, whilst accepting that there will be some winners and losers. Robbo’s £35 over the year from 40 games doesn’t seem too much. Although at the other end, Joe might be looking for a loan to spread his £31 loss a bit!
Most (if not all) of us have seen our HCs go up this year from the new system (unless you are in the ‘new to regular golf’ group), but our approach planned for next year of submitting at least weekly HCs cards across Comps and Swindles, should at provide a more level base.
All in all - given Covid and the unsettled times at the club earlier in the year - its worked out a very good year in 2021 with plenty of good sport and good humour - sorry if mine is a bit edgy sometimes (!) but its all meant ‘in the best possible taste!’
And of course a very special thanks to Graham for taking over the operation of the Swindle and maintaining all the data etc - he has done an excellent job for us all and deserves our thanks.
December fun games should be good.
