Seniors Mullighan
11th March 2024
The conditions hit us again, with a number of regular players having to drop out, because it remained carry only. Shame they are missing out on so much, but nothing that can be done realistically.
Anyway 18 went out, but only 16 arrived in with completed cards. Winesy gave it a good go, but his back put him at the front of the bar Q with an early retirement. Spiggy was apparently so quick around the course that he forgot to finish - something about his cleaning lady needing help! Well, that's his usual excuse.
Playing with two 42 point scorers (Vialls and Skinner) was enjoyable, if slightly demoralising! There was of course no coaching (not allowed during play), but H did need a bit of schooling from Dave and I on one or two matters, but the key learning lesson came to us all from Dave on the par 3 7th on Childerditch. Having hit a tree as his ball tried to sail over the lake, we weren't sure where it might have gone, so down went a Mulligan ball. Hit and same result. So, 'Dave, how was the 2nd ball marked so we can identify it when we have look?" Easy, it's a Titliest, with DS in red on it. Good we say. 'Mind you, so was the first says Dave, but that was much newer and cleaner than the 2nd one'!
So the lesson is - make sure your provisional ball is cleaner than the first one, guys!
Despite their excellent rounds of 42 though, neither Dave or H secured 1st place. Their scores were beaten by at least one kangaroo leap at 44 points, by recently arrived home Temp Aussie Resident Greg. A really excellent score for which I think it was suggested no mulligans had been used! And achieved, I gather, whilst fending off balls from Richard F playing behind!
Every good lesson has chalk, and that was perhaps Hs 1st nine holes, but then he found some cheese on the back 9 and the change earned him 27 points, which was good enough to see off DS for 2nd place on BB9.
Anyway, I witnessed some very good golf from my partners, so well done to the all the high scorers (incl. Capt Mike with a very credible 41 points).
Our thanks to Ray for getting the results out so quickly as below.
NB No competition this year, but John Ps effort on the 17th (see below) could have been a contender - definitely a mulligan if he had had any left! One good thing is that if you zoom on it you can see the ball is clearly marked as his. Looking at ball markings is going to be a thing of mine for while now!
