Warley Park Seniors Management Matters 2022
Committee Minutes
Minutes of the 1st Meeting Tuesday 22nd March 2002
Attending: S Abbott Chair, D Skinner Capt, K Sandford V-Capt, A Patel Treasure, C Vander, Competitions Secretary, B French Secretary
1 Ongoing club changes and future course changes
It was pointed out that the driveway into the club no longer has a passing bay at the entrance, which will cause problems. Also they had blocked the crossing to the path towards the 10th tee. Chairman to raise issue at club committee.
The buggy path was expected to be started on certain holes soon.
A discussion took place regarding proposed pond in front of 15th hole. The general view was more discussion with club management needed, but was not going to be started immediately.
2 Communication with club management
It was the general view that this is very poor and needs much improvement. The chairman said he had heard the Get Golfing were starting a website for the club, but it would be uniform across all Get Golfing clubs. Chairman and Captain to raise issue at Club committee meeting.
3 Seniors and Club events and organisation of said events
The captain expressed the wish that the traditional seniors captain`s drive in, be joined together with the club and lady captain's drive-in at the start of the year. He thought this would make for a better event and spectacle and be better supported. After discussion committee agreed and it will be suggested to the club committee that this approach be adopted. This does not stop the Jack Wisbey competition being a luncheon event organised by the senior`s captain.
A problem has arisen regarding the first home fixture verses Boyce Hill on 18th May, because of building work no sit down area available to eat inside. The club have said we can have a BBQ outside. This is fine if weather is ok, but would need to go inside if it is not. Club have said they cannot shut or divide a separate area for us in the spike bar, if weather is bad. Chairman to speak with Jack regarding this matter, before secretary writes to Boyce Hill explaining situation.
Competition secretary gave a report regarding this year`s fixtures. Suggested that the weather in recent year`s had caused problems. He suggested that a movement of the fun competitions into the dates before April and after October be explored. Leaving April until October as dates for golfer of the year and handicap qualifying competitions. Should a fixture fall foul of the weather before April and after October it be cancelled for that year. He felt that with advanced warning next year`s competitions could be organised in this fashion. After discussion the committee agreed with this approach, and the senior`s membership will be advised of these changes.
Keith Regan has said the Jack Wisbey competition on 11th April will be the date for opening the course 1 to18 Warley for handicap qualifying purposes. Keith has had a word with English Golf Union and the slop index should be in place, he does not think the indexes will change.
4 Seniors' committee positions
Since the last meeting Kevin Sandford has agreed to be the vice-captain.
Ray Wells has agreed to take over as Competitions secretary. Chris Vander is tutoring Ray in what the position requires. He will stay in place until October, when Ray will take over.
5 AOB
A communication had been received from a member regarding the issue of very high handicaps and suggesting the swindle be used as a way of compelling members to put in cards for handicap purposes on a regular basis.
After discussion it was decided that this is not an appropriate way to address the problem of very high handicaps. The swindle organisers have already indicated at the AGM that it is their intention to encourage swindle members to submit cards on a regular basis, and the committee supports this idea.
There`s also many members who do not play the swindle or don`t play regularly, these members should also be encouraged to submit social playing cards for handicap purposes.
The committee`s view is that if we encourage members to keep submitting cards, then a culture will develop that this is normal as the England Golf Union wants, and the issue of high handicaps will naturally be addressed.
Secretary Bill French
