Ash's Days Out
2nd Away day : Risebridge Golf Course on Weds 19th May
The 2nd Ash awayday of the year was at Risebridge GC, a new venue (for us). Although Ash disclaimed any responsibility, he did give out the wrong postcode so there were a few round trips. But everyone turned up in the end and we were greeted with reasonable coffee and good bacon rolls so the guys soon perked up! A slight delay in tee times caused by a club problem, resulted in Ash being handed a sleeve of balls for use as a prize on our nearest the pin; except that Ash took rather a fancy to them and decided to keep them by placing his tee shot on the 16th nearer than anyone else - mind you it wasn't that close!
The day was, by recent standards, a fine one - warm, some sun and with only the odd heavy shower of rain. Risebridge turned out a bit of a surprise to us - most of us weren't expecting too much, but it was much better than we thought it would be. Well laid out, some interesting well shaped holes, quite friendly for the seniors' game and well tended - the greens were particularly good, if a little slow. Current building operations and some standing water were the only drawbacks. But the scores probably fairly reflected its forgivingness!
A few of the guys claimed to have played it in their youth - although some were only talking about 25 years ago ! Who were they kidding! Geoff Js 40 years ago was a bit more in tune. Think they were all pleasantly surprised though. It was suggested we turn the Weds outings into a "Golf Memory Tour'!
Anyway to the golf. I had a very pleasant and friendly game with Ash, Greg and Richard.
Greg and I were particularly pleased and mightily amused to be the first to experience a 'new age Ash' - or 'Ash the Cautious' as we came to call him over the 1st nine holes. No Big Dog for him - firmly stuck in the bag. No eye bulging, outward Kohli competitiveness; just a nice steady wood and iron game that gifted up 21 points on the front 9. It was a pleasure to see. But Old Ash just couldn't be contained. On the 2nd nine, Out came the Big Dog, bang went the ball - Oh dear..... To be fair his injury and limp became very evident and maybe he thought that fewer hits meant less damage, but the Old Ash was rewarded with a very average 15 points for his efforts and his title hopes drifted away.
It turned out very close at the top with 3 of us on 38 points, only separated by the BB9 scores. It was good to see Kevin get in among the prizes on the awayday in 3rd place; and its always a good result to keep Robbo behind you- only a 2nd place today for him but a very good score regardless. I only pointed out twice that the final 18th hole was of course a two shot hole for a 21 handicapper!! And I never mentioned the singles once - there's restraint for you....
Happy days!
Our thanks go to Ash (sorry for the banter!) for arranging another excellent, simple, but very enjoyable day, to remind us that there is a golfing world outside WP.
See you guys in a week or so.
