SWINDLE FINAL UPDATE FOR 2020
Note : The current swindle 'rules' are set out on the separate page under the Swindle 2020 tab.
Well 2020 has been, to say the least an unusual and pretty sad year and with little prospect that it will end particularly well, but there are very promising reports that 2021 will be much better. But we have been lucky in golf, managing to get plenty of games in, including competitions and swindles, during the 'non-lockdown' periods. And considering we had fewer opportunities to play, the overall numbers playing and the size of each swindle group was well up on previous years.
Despite the lead changing quite regularly over the year the overall 'Swindler of the Year', as you already know, was Graham (Robot) Robson, who was £14 ahead of Simon Hall in 2nd place, who in turn was just £2 ahead of Bobby Doe in 3rd place.
That is Robbo's 4th Swindle Title win in 5 years (2016,17,19,20). We know what happened in 2018! Yes, but not that, Dennis won (2nd in 2017) ! We won't mention this year Dennis.
There was a big difference in approach though. Spiggy obviously saw himself taking on the Starring actor role for the year by putting in just 15 appearances (the min), whilst Robot played the supporting actor role going for quantity by putting in 48 appearances. Mind you, Robbo also managed to maintain an Average score across all 48 games of 35 points despite getting heavy HC cuts, including down to scratch! No one can argue with the quality of that performance. The WHS system might make it a little harder for him the future?
This year, partly because of the Covid situation, we went to publishing daily swindle results on the website often with a short view on the day's events, hopefully seen as mildly amusing. We will certainly continue to publish the results next year. We'll take a view on whether to carry on with the short reports.
The highlight of the year for me was of course my 70th birthday Swindle which went pretty well given our circumstances at the time - especially as I had a very good score n the day and managed a win! I'm sure you all remember it! If anybody wishes to mark a special event next year through the swindle just let one of us know.
As is usual we saw some players drop out this year for varying reasons (none related to us) and some new players who we were pleased to welcome. Hopefully, we will have a solid large group next year - no reason to believe that we won't do so.
We plan to re-start as usual in January and will be sending you more information about that nearer the time.
