SENIORS' NORFOLK TRIP 2017
Early on Tuesday October 10th fifteen intrepid seniors who had responded to Wee Winesey’s siren call set out for Barnham Broom in the far off land of Norfolk. Cars were shared and to our surprise Peter, Bo Butler and Gigolo Hill enabled their satnav and found the hotel. Last time they were together going to France they went to Belgium. The golf trip included three days of competition over the flat Hill course and the hilly Valley course both of which were excellent if a little leafy. As the man in charge of prizes I was armed with ten bottles of wine although most were only 15cl as austerity has hit sponsorship deals available. Checking in wasn’t easy as I had been registered as Sonny Hughes suggesting Peter’s computer entry skills match his satnav expertise. Other officials were Gunga Goode who had cut short a filming session with Dad’s Army and carried water, wine, and food to us as he catered for our every need and Michael ‘rule book’ Smith who did the cards and then won some of the prizes. Day 1 winner was organiser Wines who outstripped our new website expert Flash Gordon and the day also saw 3 entries to our net eagle competition. A net eagle is a 4 point hole and secures a share of the £24 kitty whilst nearest the pins went to Farquhar Mackay and me – Sonny. As the evening unfolded with excellent food and service we discover Farquhar had a dicky tummy and Kim Han Sen’s suspension has gone on his Mercedes – if it’s not his hips it’s his springs.
Day 2 breaks and Farquhar is unfit to play as the tummy bug or pints 1,2,3,4 or 5 have left him incapacitated. |
This time Mr Watt wins with Quentin O’Neill second and late arrival Beehive Doe third. Fairbanks Garvey and Bob are here having missed yesterday as they took the long route. Near the Pin winner was Hill and somewhere nearest a green in 2 winner is Hansen. The net eagle count doesn’t change. Quentin has bought a friend Richard who is the straight man and observer as Dennis explains how to play invisible brag to the gullible and Columbo Tallentire is disappointed when we know the answer to all his quiz questions forgetting we have heard them all before. On day 3 we discover Bo Butler fell out of bed, Farquhar has been charged for golf and ordered a buggy with a commode seat, and Quentin was once a bingo caller and can make cigarettes move without touching them - we are easily amused. It’s nearly time to go home but before that is round 3 and it is success for quiet John Foreman who wins 1 ball and quiet Brain Wright who secures a share of the eagle pot which unfortunately now has six entrants winning £4 each. Highest scorer on the day was again Dave Watt but under fair play rules the main prize went to scorer Mike who was second. Mr Watt was our 3 day champion having scored well in the dressage, cross country, and show jumping whilst many other seniors won prize cards to send to their loved ones explaining what they had been doing for three days. Everyone thanked Mr Wines for an excellent trip and he announced he is going to Cyprus for two weeks in case there is any comeback.
