Warley Park Seniors AGM 2022 : Officers Reports
Chairman's Report
I have had the honour of being the first Seniors’ Section Chairman and I am delighted to say the year has run smoothly thanks to the efforts of Captain Dave and all the officers. I have intervened on a few occasions with Paul and Jack to oil the wheels, but generally my involvement has not been required. Part of the rationale for having a Chairman was continuity in dealings with Get Golfing and representation of the section on the Club Committee. As most of you know, I have been asked to be Club Captain in 2024, and whilst I am happy to continue as Chairman next year, I don’t think it is appropriate to be Chairman when I am also Club Captain.
The biggest issue with Get Golfing is poor communication and David Handley has worked tirelessly to improve this. We now have a Members WhatsApp group, which is a big step forward, although there are still issues with the organisational structure of Get Golfing, which seems to mean that the right hand doesn’t always seem to know what the left hand is doing. I do believe that things are getting better and will continue to do so. We are seeing investment in the Course and the Facilities, even if we don’t always agree with the priorities!! Paul tends to be the focal point for our complaints, but often he is a victim of the poor communications generally and I think both Paul and Sarah are doing a good job.
Thank you again to all the officers and the Committee, we have a great section and long may it continue to thrive.

Captain’s Report
It’s been a great pleasure to Captain the seniors section this year.
The advice I’ve received has been fantastic. So thanks to everyone for that.
I initially had a little trouble finding a vice captain. But thanks to the persuasive powers of Viv Sandford I managed to secure Kevin’s signature. Please let’s all give him the support he deserves next year.
The inter club season kicked off with a draw in atrocious weather at the end of March at Cannons Brooke and finished in sunny October at Top Meadow with a narrow loss.
In between we had notable victories home and away against both Upminster and Boyce Hill. The overall season was a great success and enjoyed by all who partook.
The competitions were generally well supported with a mixture of winners, but the outstanding player again was Greg Burnham who took the GOY for the second year in a row.
The away trip to East Sussex National was a great success with 24 seniors attending.
The weather for the second day was appalling so we will have to make the trek back to play our second eighteen. Thanks to all who came along.
Many thanks to Gordon for his excellent work as our ‘Communications Guru’ and for his continuing support. Our secretary Bill who puts in so much unseen work and for his efforts in making sure we have a team for inter club matches. I would also like to thank Ash for both his work as the Treasurer and the very enjoyable away days. Chris Vander and Ray Wells deserve a big thank you for the efforts they put into organising our club competitions. I would like to mention my appreciation to Roger for the thankless task of polishing and caring for the trophies.
The swindle continues to be well organised by Graham and numbers have been high, as have the scores.
The bandit of the year, to be announced at the Christmas lunch, has many contenders so don’t be disappointed if you miss out.
As you all are aware the charity this year was the Corbets Tey School. This has been supported by all sections of the club and has benefited not only from the money raised (just short of £7000) but by also having the children here at the club to use the suitable facilities.
Finally thanks again for all your support and I wish Kevin all the best for next year.

Secretary’s Report
I would like to start by thanking this year’s captain Dave Skinner for his contribution in the smooth running of the team matches. Also, the rest of the committee who have all supported me, in particular Gordon, without whose help my limited technology skills would be very evident.
The year started disappointingly with Orsett, who had agreed a home and away fixture, pulling out of the agreed arrangements. It was too late for any replacement as most fixtures are agreed a year in advance.
This still left 14 fixtures, which were all successfully completed. We fielded a full side of 16 players in all but the two matches against Maylands, which were 14 a-side, and the match against Canons Brook at home, also 14 a-side. A list of all the results is on the website (https://www.warleyseniors.co.uk/2022-match-dates-and-results.html ).
I contacted various clubs requesting a fixture to replace the two lost, and I am pleased to announce that Romford and Gidea Golf Club have agreed to play us. This brings our matches to 16; all the dates are in the 2023 fixture list (circulated and on the website). I will ask for names nearer the dates in the usual fashion.
The cost of next year’s matches will have to rise slightly. It will mean £23 for a home game, and £28 for an away match. The price for the home match does include the buying of a drink for the opposition. It’s a much more efficient system in getting served after the matches are completed, and appears to be a success.
It has become increasingly difficult to get the team numbers together for the matches, and on various occasions I have had to go outside of the main senior’s section to do so. This can be for various reasons, but if there is any way we can make the matches more attractive to the membership, please let me know. The committee are always willing to discuss any suggestions.
A reminder that the Christmas lunch will be held on Monday 12th December at 1.00, and the cost to members will be £20. This will mean a subsidy of £3 per person. If you wish to take part let me know by the 3rd December with the menu choices advised in the recent email covering that.

Competition Secretary’s Report
In February 2022 Mike Trett due to family commitments sadly resigned as Seniors Competitions Secretary . Having been Mike’s no2 for a number of years, I agreed to take over the role for the rest of 2022 subject to a replacement being found for 2023.
After discussions with a number of Seniors, in April 2022 Ray Wells kindly agreed to take over as Competition Secretary’s from the 1st January 2023. Ray and I have worked closely together since that date. Ray has got to grips with the role and will make an excellent Competition Secretary. I will carry on in 2023 as Ray’s no2.
In April 2022 the Warley Park Main No 1 Course re-opened after various course changes. Apart from some Competitions earlier in the year being played on Childerditch and Main Course 2, we have played all Competitions on the Main Course. Due to the weather conditions up to end of Marc a number of Competitions were cancelled and/or re-arranged. With the improving weather conditions and an excellent Summer all Competitions have been played on Main Courses 1 & 2.
With regard to the Seniors 2023 Competition/Fixture list, following discussion by the Committee it has been agreed that there will a number of Competition changes. Between January to end of March and from October to November, we will be playing Seniors Fun (non Handicap) Competitions, leaving the main summer period for the key competitions. The re-arrangement of the fixture list will hopefully mean fewer cancellations of Handicap Competitions. The full Competition/Fixture list has been published.
Good luck to you all for Christmas and great Golfing in 2023.

Treasurer’s Report
Interclub Matches made a loss of £229 over 14 matches because the 15% discount on food was removed by GG mid way through the season. The change of increasing home match fee from £5 to £20 and including drinks as part of the match fees worked well.
To cover the £229 loss, match fees will have to be raised by £1. Also a further £2 will be required to be added to allow for inflation, which is running at over 10%.
Senior Competitions made a profit of £248 so no need to change anything.
Special events.
Ladies/Seniors events made a loss as the prizes for the 2nd of these events were donated by the two sections and there was no competition entry fee.
Guest day made a small profit. of £102
Christmas lunch was subsidised by £6 therefore made a loss on £260
Drive in lunch made a loss as the section paid the staff tip.
Captains Day made a loss due to GG removing the 15% discount at the last minute.
Total of Other Expenses were £477 mainly due to increases in Gifts and Charity donations and Trophies and Honours Board.
Overall net result is a loss on the year of £818 and a reduced balance of funds to £2095
Recommendations for 2023 season
That concludes my report.
