2022 Ladies and Seniors - Mixed Pairs Competition
Weds 26th April 2023
Some of the 25, or so, men who volunteered to play found themselves jilted before the ladies-seniors day arrived, as only 16 ladies had signed up to play. Very low turn out. We obviously need to spruce up a bit more next time guys!
Although, when asked if any wanted to drop out, some of the seniors got out of the starting blocks rather quicker than they usually do! But not all resignations were accepted by Capt Kev.
Indeed one initial drop out (Ash Patel) found himself back in the team playing alone with two ladies - that situation brought about, claimed the missing man (unnamed), because he was drafted in without his knowledge and so didn’t turn up.
As Kev's in Bermuda for 6 weeks now we can't fact check that!
But at one stage the two ladies thought perhaps they were going to have to play alone, as Ash was late - leaves on the road? No, sorry, heavy traffic. No one else late so it must have been right outside Ash's house?
To compound it all, Ash, as our treasurer, has the job of getting the prizes. But in the rush to get out of his bed - sorry I meant road, he forgot the M@S Vouchers and had to do cash instead. Well at least it meant the winning men could buy something other than more socks and the ladies - well whatever the ladies buy from Marks!
Anyway Chris Vander and Barbara Cormack with Capt Kev had done their work on the pairings and shared handicaps and on the day all was ready for play to start. As we know conditions haven't been great recently and that was the case on the day, although the course certainly wasn't at its worst.
Everyone appeared to arrive back safety with no 'falling overs or indeed outs' reported!
We were a little surprised to find ourselves sitting downstairs in fours rather than upstairs for our meal in the usual way, but we've all been around long enough to cope. The meal was, well... lasagne - with bread. The conversational 'buzz' suggested that despite that it all worked pretty well.

Having feasted we went onto the presentation for the day's winners and losers. Seniors' Captain Kev gave it his full attention. I paraphrase - but not much. 'Hello you lot. Had a good day. Hope you played well. If you didn't - hard luck!' (not really, but I think he might get it that brief one day). You can borrow that speech if you like Kev!
Barbara expressed thanks from the ladies for a very enjoyable day (She did that of course after she knew she had won - so ......'
The winners (with photos ) and non winners (woke) are listed below.
But very well done to Dave Handley and Barbara Cormack on a really excellent winning score of 44 in poor conditions.
And to Ash Patel and his actual pairs partner Sue Jarvis, who narrowly bested Kim Hansen and Sue Allen (told you I'd get you a mention somehow) on BB6 on 40 points.
For some strange reason the presentation process was dominated by people wanting to kiss Capt Kev and I do mean everyone! This is a new phenomenon for the seniors - perhaps it's just as well he has cleared off for 6 weeks!
As poor Chris Severn had had to endure both the loss of her partner, and also Ash for 18 holes, she was awarded the Red wine that wasn't used up as a prize for the ladies nearest the pin on the 14th. I think she might also have mentioned to Ash over the 18 holes how much she liked Red wine. Shall try that one when I next play with Ash.
Let's hope for a bigger turn out for the next one. We could up an extra prize for the winning lady - another round of golf with Ash, who of course comes with a bottle of red wine?
No animals or people have been harmed in this partial truth telling. All information was provided willingly by those mentioned, or was observed in the public domain. Any claims for damages should be forwarded to the Seniors Treasurer who will happily pay out, as most of this information came from him!
