When Robbo reported on his groups scores etc today he said what a lovely day it was for golf : always better on a day you take 1st place! But I can vouch for the golf weather having played a singles 9 hole round on Childerditch this morning.
A good final win of the year, although the field was of course greatly reduced through a Covid case, enforced isolations, un-enforced partial isolations, and no doubt a few 'I can't be bothered for a last game in the mud', and of course those that had to take time out to go and Q for toilet rolls at the Supermarket! (AWOL - Bob?).
Well done to Paul for 2nd place.
We usually play the formal swindle up to the end of November to determine the end of year Winner etc , but of course we cant do that. So that was the final Swindle game of 2020.
Much like the USA election still going on it will be sometime before all the pounds are counted and people's positions are worked out and then adjusted in any conceivable way, incl. Court challenges, to make myself the Winner overall and collect all your money - only joking of course. Although I do have to do all the final entries etc and there will be an end of year report, we can with some certainty say that Graham (Robot) Robson will top the table and is again our Swindler of the Year. Well done G - your level of consistency is to be admired - we'll have to think about another type of handicap change for next year - It might be something like only allowing you to putt with a 7 iron! Could get a lesson from BobB.

On a day when we thought we might not play at all it was a real bonus for most Seniors to find that we didn't even have to go over the road to Childerditch and that we could play the usual Warley 1 to 18. I have to say that the condition of the course was better than most of us expected.
Much talk in some of the groups centred around the forthcoming World Handicap System with many players relieved to hear that all the working out would be done for them and results sent by e mail at midnight on 1st November. Some of the keener Seniors already know their new handicap index and corresponding course handicap. No doubt we will all get used to things in the coming months.
On the course itself today the scores were very closely bunched with 15 of the 20 scores being between 30 and 37. Congratulations go to the money winners Joe, Gordon and Spiggy
Don't forget hedgehog wheels and shotgun start for the Poppy competition on Monday.

What a lovely morning for golf! A bit wet underfoot but nice and dry above. Only one pre-warned drop out so a day of few changes. Thank you.
It was all a bit slow to start with and I gather that towards the end especially it did get a bit tortuous. More on that is another place.
We had only one and indeed the correct Jackson today so no tee slot hitches. In fact it was pretty boring really. Not the golf though. Our 4 ball had a very good match (James/Bell v Allen/O'Neill) which the latter won narrowly, with 4 or was it 5 birdies - shared out. Steve B is fitting in very well and has worked out quickly how to handle O'N - brilliant! He is even telling stories about O'Ns eagle on the 6th! (Winsey - you need to start working on a suitable friendly name for SB for publication purposes). O'N and I had our usual £one pounder today- have I told you just how much he owes me this year - no its too embarrassing! But I was caught in two minds today as he was on the same team and I found myself giving him words of encouragement and advice - big mistake, as he just took the money!
Over the years we have seen some strange things on the course, but today was the first time I found out that it was possible to go coarse fishing in the rough? This was laying in the rough separating the 2nd and 4th fairways!! And believe me it wasn't a small one! Now I'm no expert, but it looked like a carp to me, and they don't leap a 50-100 feet do they? And are there fish that big in the pond on the 2nd anyway? Lots of questions and no answers. I didn't mention it to O'N because he would have told me fish joke after fish joke all the way round! Are there any other stories out there about interesting things seen on the course - other than O'Ns eagle of course!
Any on the golf. 5 shot back in one go Patel came in with a winning 37, from Geoff Brown's 36 with, oh god, that man again in 3rd place.
Postscript : Hall and Hansen have been having a bit of a scoring battle having secured 1st and 2nd last time out and finishing in the same order today just outside the prizes. Han-sen keeps moaning that Hall gets birdies that put him out in front. My advice - Put a dead fish in his bag Han-sen - at the very least you'll then need to avoid him!

After changing the draw once again last night when Ray was left without any wheels for today, I thought I had everything in place and all would run smoothly. How wrong I was!!
I arrived in good time and mentioned the last minute changes to those involved when suddenly I noticed not one but two Jacksons in the car park. Both informed me that they had replied to Gordon but, for some reason, I only had one in the draw (NB a later check by the Editor found that Jackson P, one of our youngest seniors, had obviously been practising having a seniors memory, not having mentioned Friday at all! Ed). The situation was quickly rectified and 24 happy golfers set off (Eds note 24 'happy' seniors and I missed it? ). (I wonder how many noticed my deliberate mistake?). Well done to those who did. We ended up going out in 4 threeballs and 3 fourballs, instead of 6 fourballs. Still i thought the morning ran smoothly in the end and we all got round quite quickly.
The course is holding up well and the greens are looking really good. Just a shame that 20 odd of us didnt take advantage. Congratulations go to Spiggy, Kim and (not supposed to be there. Ed) Jackson P, for taking the cash. Well played guys. Kim did mention that after 16 holes he had 34 points to Spiggy's 31 points and thought he had it in the bag. Sadly for him Spiggy produced a par and a birdie on 17 and 18 against Kim's, double bogey and a par. It just goes to show it's never over until its over!!!

After much rain in general recently and a Tuesday of constant heavy rain the course was in surprisingly playable condition for today’s swindle. A good turn out of 25.
Sad to say, but today was a bit like steering your game through a ‘day of the dead’ episode, with the worm treatment on the greens being so successful that there was carnage and the new hazard of ‘worm deflections’ came into play! All for the greater good we understand.
As part of the 1st group out, Robbo (2nd group) checked with me if we were serious about applying the call up on hole 8 - of course was the reply! A new objective was applied to our 3 ball game - at all cost get so far ahead of the 2nd group that we didn’t have to call them up. That was the most successful part of our game today!
As we were in very quickly from the front and gone before most of you came in I didn't pick up any interesting bits today. But a little reminder that in every poor looking score there is usually something to shout about. Ash wasn't his best at the start, as his score might suggest (although off 10), but he did finish with 5 rather good straight pars (one of which was very close to a birdie), so watch him for Friday as he might be coming into form!
But I did warn you all didn't I! Back on his full HC Robbo was the threat to beat and so it proved. A couple of the contenders for the Swindle challenge, Bobby £ and Sweety Greg, made a good stab at grabbing the top spot, but it was not to be with their 36s (along with others). Fair do though, 39 in today's conditions was a pretty good result. Unfortunately, despite a desperate last minute appeal to the Wednesday Organiser I wasn't able to find any more back nine points to get into the money prizes!!

Amid days of rain it turned out a coldish start, but dry morning - most welcome. Very good turn out for the swindle with 26 players. Can't say I heard anything of interest this morning, although it appears from the results that I played with someone called S Skinner and I assume the others were therefore H Hansen and W Wines. Winsey 'I'll be back' seemed to be suffering from just that this morning ie a back problem, when he failed to live up to his recent excellent performance. But he'll be back...! We were going for a full house of 1,2,3 of Daves this morning, but sweetman Greg managed to get in there and sandwich himself into 2nd with a very good 38 points - every time I play with Greg I live in hope that he will bring some samples! Doug was squeezed out with a good 36 points. But the day went to Dave Cormack with an excellent 39, just missing out on a extra point for an extra cut! Well done to those guys. And commiserations to John Carter who either had a very miserable day compared to his normal pretty good average score of 32, or someone only noted down his score for the back nine!

An absent Organiser today so no idea what actually happened - playing in seniors match on the course against Warren, which the Captain drew 4-4 (not helped by Wilco and I !). I did spot a face on the course drop a ball into the 5th hole from a chip about 40 or 50 yards out. Looked like Sharpie - but no I must be mistaken, he wasn't on my start list? But yes he was because he just turned up on chance to get a game - against all our rules!! Noted Sharpie. Looks like Martin is still in good form and put in the best score of 35 for a win. Geoff Brown and Ray Wells had a bit of a battle of the cards to determine the 2nd and 3rd places, which Ray won on the better B6. And it looks as if poor old Roger was suffering from a recent Winners blues, with a bottom place score today.

Based on weather predictions, a few dropped before the day. A few dropped out before we started having no confidence in my prediction that all would be good just after 9am.Either that or they were enjoying being served at their tables with tea and coffee too much under the new system. Graham pulled his hair out (he still has some) re-organising groups. A start was made.
All went well until...... 'where's Roger, we are on the tee?" Have you a visual image of someone leaping off the toilet with pants down, tearing their hair out (another one) and shouting bloody hell where is the toilet paper!? Yes? Now think Roger! He was bit flustered on the 1st hole - but recovered.
It was raining, but not sooooo bad. But the last group played the first hole and then took early retirement, some for the nth time. We had to deal with new innovations for the 1st time - ditches with yellow or red posts; holes with lift up ball ejectors. Some struggle with new technology you know (Den how did you get on?).
He wasn't in our in our group, but I gather that hole 2 was a special one for Kim today. An eagle from 80 yards out. He claims he saw it go in. Never sees my ball when we play! Congratulations Kim. Couldn't happen to a nicer man.
At hole 4 Bobby £, wrapped up as he was, called it a day ; too cold. Down to 3, but all went well until Locke Spinney. Kevin (Sandford) playing his 2nd swindle hit a lovely drive off the tee; ball went miles (golfers miles of course), but where's the club head? Certainly not attached to his shaft! An expensive hit. Kevin retired hurt and off to get his club mended. Down to 2. The weather brightened (as expected). All these desertions - nothing to do with you Roger I said....
At the 8th we caught up with the 4 ball in front. A huddle resulted in Dave Skeels being given a free transfer to our group, but only from the 10th. We considered it a great signing considering who else was on offer - were you in that group Den?
Plain sailing after that in the mild sunshine. Got to the 12th and who do we see playing the 7th? The 'we aren't going out - its wet folk'. Hope you enjoyed the good weather guys.
Roger's 32 was the best score in our 4 ball - nothing to challenge from us we thought. But as you can see it was good enough and gets Roger a £8 payout, but a 3 shot cut. With Dave Skinner in 2nd also with 32 just short by a back nine point, and Geoff Brown also with 32 (HC adjustment) in 3rd. Robbo breathed a sigh of relief just missing out on a possible 3rd place cut of 1 to take him to a 3 HC. Low scoring, but well done guys for getting out there.
And although (at his request) in the £1 Allen-O'Neill stakes our even 29 points was a tie - I did really win on back nine (again). But no pounds have been harmed in writing that sentence!
And the morning ended perfectly for me as Roger was kind enough, despite winning, to get my MacMillan coffee and cake!
His 'first out slot' next Monday has nothing to do with the former note....but I do like coffee and cake.

No full report as neither I or Ash were there, but it sounded fun for some. Peter earned himself a nice cut of 4 shots - well done Winsey. Poor old chap Martin though earned a cut of 5 for just £5/5points for a 2nd place, but with a 3rd 40+ score! Well done though Martin. Don’t like to mention it (but of course that means that I must) but it was just as well for Dennis that I played away today - saved him a £1! Finally, you welcomed Paul W-D on his first (although I gather not too successful) outing with the seniors and he expressed his thanks for your support on the way round. A few good holes, so always something to come for Paul.
Not so finally as Martin has given me a few comments. 'A few players arrived late due to traffic jams! So I mixed the teams up in order to get things moving. Wines had a particularly good game as he has finally found is Short game. Apparently it's been missing for some time!! My front nine did have 2 blobs so again I am still trying to find my consistency. " Martin

Another fine morning for golf - there seems to have been so many this year despite the lockdown! A very good Weds turnout of 25 players. There was much talk at the start of Dennis's, Adder and the need for care in the long stuff, but Dave Skeels told me that he was already in hiding! Henry V turned up to play having escaped from his house moving situation, but according to his group avoided the 2 by 2 loading process and instead went for a 4 by 4s process in his points scoring - but not enough to get him in the prizes. And Robbo's 37 points off 4 deserves a glance. But it was good to see that the top honour for the day went to someone who hasn't been in that position with us until now - Bob Bird with a very good 40 points. Well done, but sorry Bob, that's a HC cut of 4. And also a 1st time cash winner this year in 2nd place with 38 points (39 with his extra unused shot!) - Alan Hewlett. And congratulations to Master Tactician (MT) Tretty on securing 3rd place with a good 37 points from Robbo on BB9. It always good to see winners of course, but equally satisfying that the HC cut system works - as I know playing 4 below- isn't it Dave S!

As I was playing in the match against Maylands today I wasn't able to hear about the day events, but I did notice that the swindlers got away from us match players pretty quickly. You'll be pleased to know that Captain Steve did the double over Maylands with a tight home win. There were some Swindle casualties though with James S damaging himself and having to drop out of the forthcoming competition - hope you mend quickly James. And certainly Dave Ss Handicap has taken a big hit, with a cut of 5 shots for a rather excellent score of 44 points today. Mind you he was off an enhanced HC of 26 (2 extra) which means in effect that he has only been cut 3 ! Given his recent very good competition win I don't think he needed those 2 extra shots! And well done to John C on a good 2nd place with 38 points (BB9) from Roger. But the main news of the day was that Dennis has a pet Adder (and not his personal card marker - although I can't recall when I last saw a card marked by him!). He claims it crossed over the 18th green: presumably he saw it from a distance as his is rarely on the 18th green. Anyway, by the time we arrived it had obviously been subtracted as it wasn't in evidence - assume it went off to Multiply. ( I know ......childish).

With Gordon on holiday, Ash practiced his report writing skills again and might write his autobiography with all the experience he is getting!!
With Bob Doe dropping out, 21 swindlers took part in the battle for points on a beautiful September day. With several players on big cuts there was opportunity for others to claim some prize money.
Winsey took 1st prize with 37pts (adjusted from 40pts after checking his card). Peter's 30 handicap confused Stephen Richardson, I mean Richard Stephenson so much that he kept giving Peter extra points, and Peter accepted them with glee. In fact Peter took a lot of ribbing about his 30 handicap but no more Peter, as you will be playing off 27 next 4 games. In fact it was a very close swindle with Peter, Ash, Robbo and Geoff Brown all scoring 37.
Ash took 2nd place with Robbo having to reluctantly accept 3rd place.
Bad luck Geoff.

Following slight alterations to the draw all 28 players managed to make it to the first tee on time.
It proved to be as close a swindle as we have had this year with only two points separating the top 6. It was noted that none of them scored 40 points!!
Paul Jackson played his first " money" swindle and we welcomed Kevin Sandford to his first ever swindle. Both acquitted themselves well and we hope they will be enjoying many more swindles in the future.
Having made the first tee on time there was a shock in store for everyone having played their second shot (or in some cases their third or fourth) as a ditch miraculously appeared just short of the green!!! Will this hole remain as stroke index 11 was the question being asked by one or two groups? A few more ditches appeared as we progressed through the course (on the 4th 6th and 15th) although they didn't really have the same impact as the one on the 1st hole.
The winning places were extremely tight with Senor Steve just pipping a rejuvenated Ash with Dennis also just pipping Ray on the back 6.

Felt like Autumn was with us until it warmed up half way around the course. Some seem to be having trouble with the greens - can’t explain it as I am one of them. But I’m sure there are lots of views about why.
As I was doing the Swindle table update the day before I noticed that Bobby £ was up to his (is ‘generous’ too strong word for it?) HC of 21 for today’s game, and thought to myself I could have a £1 bet on him for tomorrow. And sure enough he produced an excellent 44 point score today. With two other 40+ scores (but only one with a prize) counting he earns a 5 shot cut just to put him back in his place for a couple of games before the HC police catch up with him soon.
Second place on scores was actually Paul Jackson, but as it was only his 3rd game today he can’t access the dosh. But unfortunately for him as it was technically a 2nd place score he gets a cut of 2 for 4 games! The 1st nine was rather special to observe, but like all would be seniors, he hasn’t yet quite got the hang of managing the yellows over 18!! The 2 shot cut might hold him back a bit, but watch for him on his next outing though when his £1 is at stake! I feel Robbo has a challenging year ahead in 2021 if PJ gets the time to play with us regularly.
So 2nd place went to Greg B on 37, with a better back nine than Will G also on 37. Well done guys.
I have to record though that it was a very special day for Dennis. It was the first time in the swindle for many months that he managed to beat my score and earn himself one of my special £s in our private Table. I do rather feel though that I have a Table with short legs on one side as it leans heavily towards me and the £s just keep sliding off in my lap. I wouldn’t want to undermine his achievement today of course, because I believe (as Ash knows ) in using carrots rather than sticks to improve performance, but it does need to be recorded that Den played off 4 above his club HC today and I played 4 below my club today, so the 2 point win for 8 extra shots is, how can I say this gently? Pathetic!!
Editor Apology!? : Sometimes the scale for alternative facts gets stretched a little and those offering views on the world have to reflect whether a ‘faction’ used for effect, is altogether fair or not. And so, I was recently challenged by Colin B about the degree of accuracy in my story about the birthday card. It is now revealed that Colin did a) buy his own 70th Birthday card for me b) did only find out afterwards that it didn’t have an envelope and c) did actually sign it. I have carefully considered his complaint and sought guidance from the ‘Golf Story Fact Checker Website’, but have concluded that his facts don’t make a good story, and anyway Stan’s postman’s role was a bit dodgy too, so ‘faction’ or not, I prefer my story! But thanks very much for the card anyway - it was much appreciated!!
Talking of Stan. He must have been spending time on the 12th today playing with his new toys ie woods (as opposed to his old woods, which were in may bag). I can guess this because whilst he was at play his ‘out of control trolley’ nearly ran over two older ladies on the 7th tee as it came charging over the hill, and and then nearly took out his best friend Martin at the knees. We did of course examine it for goodies (not Martins goodies) before he reclaimed it. (Yes, I know that there is editorial exaggeration in this!).

Whilst Gordon was continuing his celebrations in turning 70 Ash took over the organisation for the Monday swindle. The pressure proved too much for him as he recorded his lowest score of the season. Only kept off the bottom spot by Joe Hardy who retired early after 11 holes. Hope everything is all well with you Joe. Ash's lowest score can be attributed to nearly cutting his finger off whilst gardening when he got his fingers is the way of the secateurs. He can't play one handed. A good job he partnered Martin Goode (28) who must have played his best ever round at Warley. Poor Dave Cormack (22) and Henry Vials were aghast with horror and Henry playing off 22 instead of 29 quipped 'I now know how lower handicappers feel about higher handicappers' How many times have you scored 40+ Henry?
So on a warm sunny day some really good scoring with 13 players recording 36+. Well done to all of you, but the winner by a country mile is Martin Goode with 47. Somebody buy him a sombrero!!

Below are 3 tables.
The 1st is the normal Swindle result table from the day based on Swindle HCs.
The 2nd is the result table based on full club HCs for the award of Gordon’s 70th prizes.
The 3rd is the result of the Separated Pairs part of the competition.
A bright start on a day when the wind was a force to be reckoned with. The Swindle was also of course my 70th special with prizes.
Stan’s wife thoughtfully purchased him a card to give to me (thank you) and even went a stage further by buying Colin a card to give me (as he was playing with me that day). Unfortunately Colin was caught up in his bed’s ‘sleep mode’ and didn’t have time to take it out of the plastic bag and write it - but I really appreciated Stan giving it to him to give me on his behalf!
Unfortunately, Colin’s day didn’t get much better after that, as although he had turned up physically, he was perhaps still getting some extra sleep during the round, and had a very quiet day. Alternatively of course, as it was only his 3rd swindle he kindly followed the ‘rules’ and saved mounting a serious challenge for the 4th game when he could access the dosh. Anyway we look forward to Colin coming along for the 4th game.
Stan of course has recently expanded his normal tuck shop service and now offers trade in SH clubs at super discount prices. As I had been very lazy about improving my clubs over the years I did a bit of shopping with Stan and purchased 3 woods (they definitely were not Ashs). Having tried them rather unsuccessfully in a few games I did ask Stan after playing Maylands what his discount rate was for clubs that simply didn’t perform. I felt that there should be a discount for every fail to score well game - well Stan would have no tuck - sorry truck with that approach. So I was burdened yet again to play with underperforming clubs. But then magically they started to perform well and, as you can see from the table, helped me mount a rather impressive (for me) winning score of 43 points in the Swindle! So I’m now a fan of Stan’s club - tuck shop.
Talking of batteries (?) I’m sure I saw Ash come into car park early for his tee slot but then very much later saw him taking out a battery from his car - I’m not sure how he got home. Ask Ash.
On the more serious part.
Thanks to all those who turned out, those who would have done so had they not had other commitments (I believed you all), and for all the best wishes I received. The event made the day a bit more special for me at a time when big celebrations are not the order of the day. I was very pleased to see that Mike Smith was able to take part so soon after his ill health, but I was sorry to see that he had to retire early on. Take care Mike - don’t overdo things.
Special thanks to Graham Robson for doing the draw and cards and general organisation etc - you’ll notice he rewarded himself with a prize!.
So to the results. As I said I was actually the Swindle winner, which was a bit special on that day, and get my 1st (?) 4 shot HC cut this year as a result. Well done to Bill and Doug on 2nd and 3rd places in the Swindle.
But I’m not able to take my own prize of course - awarded on Club HC scores.
So the Overall Winner was: Bill French
Winner HCs 18 and under : Robbo
Winner HCs 19s and over : Bobby Doe
Nearest the Pin : Martin Goode (NB there was only one other on the marker, but I’m too modest to say who it was!
And for those that had a bad day - prizes to Geoff Brown (18 and under) and Alan Hewlett (19 plus).
In addition, there was the ‘not quite blind, but separated pairs’ comp result, which was taken by Bill French and Henry Vialls. As I had said that no-one gets more than one prize, Bill’s balls go to Dougie (and you know what he talks about), and I have added another one for Spiggy, who were in 2nd place.
I’ll dish out the prizes as I see you over the next week or so.
Thanks all, throughly enjoyed my day.
NB Graham asked me to add this so I am: “On behalf of all of us in the Seniors Section thank you very much for the drinks after the Swindle to celebrate your 70th birthday and also for the generous donation of special prizes for today's competition.”

With the year's first seniors golf match planned for the next day the numbers were down a bit for the Weds swindle. The threat of rain became a reality midway, but it wasn't bad enough to deter all from finishing. The course has certainly responded well to recent rain with the option to actually stop (reasonably quickly) balls on the greens. A welcome to Paul J, who although he has played with us on the odd occasion , formally joined in the Swindle this morning. Only two more to go Paul before we start taking all your money!!
Organiser Ash had it all working smoothly today, although his clubs had to undergo an inspection to double check he hadn't purchased Dave Watts gear SH as his had also recently been stolen. Are WP members on a list somewhere?
Very good result from 'in form' Van-der-man with an excellent 43 points, which, without bald tyres denying him a placement, I understand could well have been 44 points. We all know that Chris loves doing deals, but recently there was a story (unconfirmed) circulating that in one recent deal he had sold his sole to Ivan? You will have to ask him more. Mind you Chris's walk around the course will seem little longer now with 4 shots taken off his HC. Well done Chris.
Two further 40 point, or more scores, from AA and JC secured well deserved 2nd and 3rd places.
And a little mention should be made of Ash's 35 off 6 given that that would have been 43 off his full HC of 14. He is looking dangerous for Friday back off full HC. And Robot obviously needs a service and oil up: only 38 off his full HC! (that should fire him up for Friday's extra prize day!).

Its was Weds and definitely Ash’s day to be the organiser. There were a few slight hitches though.
And although it was perhaps the hottest- sweatiest day of the year so far that wasn't the main issue.
1 Ash had forgotten that he told AN Other No 1 that they could play in a spare slot and then also told AN Other No 2 that they could play in the same slot. So major reorganisation required before play.
2 He was about to tee off with his new wood, purchased 2nd hand from the club shop, but noticed that he couldn't quite reach down to the ball. He went in to complain to Ed at the desk who gently pointed out that he appeared to have a ladies 3 wood in his hand! A quick transaction, money back in pocket and off to the tee for a promising game with a new (2nd hand) super duper driver.
3 Ash tees off - into the ditch - a bit worried he has purchased another dud club he looks for his ball, only to realise he can’t actually see anything because he hasn’t put his contact lenses in yet! Back to the club to correct his vision. [Ed acks some minimal artistic licence with storyline!]
I have to say after that it was a very entertaining game and Ash’s driver was certainly taking him into new and exciting places far distant from the tee - sometimes we found that the ball had escaped completely in protest at the harsh treatment, but we all agreed it was top points for entertainment value. (NB I am selling spots to play with Ash from now onwards)
A very convincing win for Mr Hansen, with a massive 44 points, who has now jetted off to wet Scotland to spend his, long awaited, hard earned winnings. Having seen Geoff J put his round of 39 points together today I can say it was a thing of beauty, lovely straight tee shots and excellent putting. A calm contrast to the emotional power of Ash the bash. And a very well done to Dave Skeels with a very good 38 points. No positional changes to the table from today's results.
And the best question today was certainly Geoffs to Ash after he revealed he couldn’t see without his contacts in - "so, Ash how do you see to drive……….?" Beware those who live around the Shenfield area!

The usual early start on what, it was said, was to be the hottest day of the year and for some time. Certainly is got very hot by the back nine. You cannot deny that the fairways are finding it tough to survive the drought and hot weather, with the rather mixed blessing of odd bounces, but also very long runs. (I might just mention here that I played Redlibberts on Weds and the comparison was that I measured one drive at 340 yards - yes you heard it here - 340 yards!). Tougher conditions have certainly been affecting scores. Anyway Bob £, back on his Club HC of 21 (!!) was the overall winner on 37 points - the buggy helped with energy levels today I'm sure! Will (I am) G, playing off an extra shot, just missed out from the largest pot share on the BN score, and John Clare (still waiting for him to quote one of his well known poems as we go round) took 3rd place also on an an extra shot and also just pipping Dave Skinner on BB9. And as one would expect those with the savage HC cuts were struggling to challenge from the bottom - Martin not sure what you are doing there? Elsewhere, DenOn appears to be getting his game going a little, with the help of 2 extra shots, as he was just one behind me in today's game as part of the ongoing personal challenge, although I have to say that my £pound shop is expanding nicely, thank you!

A new Organiser contribution to the storyline today!
Just 14 swindlers turned up on another hot sunny day whilst some others decided they were bored of Warley and played elsewhere. The course was very dry, and in a poor state, especially the tees and fairways. Poorly maintained bunkers meant that the greens were the only part of the course any good. Where are the improvements that were promised!!!
I had my clubs stolen from my car sometime between the Monday swindle and the Wednesday swindle the previous week so I was using Chris's Ping G5 spare set, very nice clubs Chris so thank you. Rumour has it that Robbo found out I scored my best ever score of 78 at Warley and was afraid of the competition he was facing so arranged for my clubs to be stolen. The other rumour is that my wife thinks I play too much golf and she binned my clubs.
For the first time ever my handicap was below Robbo so I had no chance of beating him as he scored 38 pts which initially put him in 3rd place. A £2 prize and 1 cut was not what he wanted and he went home grumpy.
He must now be delighted as upon scrutiny 4th placed Graham Sharp played off the wrong handicap (27 instead of 28) so he takes 3rd place with a worse bb9 than Tretty. 2nd Tretty also on 38 but better bb9 than Graham. Congratulations to Keith Killington who was top dog. Those free lessons your son is giving you are working Keith.

Back to a lovely sunny warm day. Greens had been sanded and some were a bit slower and some a bit faster! A bit of a serious and sad start to the day as Ash, who had last used his clubs to amount a winning 40 points on Wednesday, couldn't find them in his boot when he arrived. He went off home wondering if he had left them there, but alas not, so it would 'seem' that they were taken. But what we thought was probably a senior moment for Ash, happened anyway, but to Will. Standing on the tee he realised his battery wasn't in the trolley. We all went off, while he went to get it from the car. Not there so he joins us on the 1st fairway with a hire pull trolley and then plays an excellent round of 38 to claim the 2nd spot. Later over coffee its revealed that that the battery was in fact in the car under his seat! I don't think you can get a set of clubs there? Anyway getting back to golf another excellent round from that sweet man Greg with a very impressive 40 points. Downside, he has done it twice before, so a rather massive 6 shot cut! Third place was taken by someone who, as far as I know, wasn't even there, so that was impressive- well he wasn't on the start sheet. Well done Kim - you must have got the new clubs? Dennis is having a torrid time lately so we need to give him some comradely encouragement - just not too much as my £1 a game is mounting up nicely!! A day off for Robo, but he is back almost immediately, off full HC, so beware!

A rare wet start didn't go down too well, but it brightened and nearly everyone made it through to the end. A sizzling day for Ash though who amassed a very good 40 points playing off a cut HC of 11. He gets the best reward of course - a lovely cut of 5 shots. I gather that included a couple of 2s on the par 3s with long putts, so a bit lucky then! No, well done Ash. And Rex is still there showing us how to do it in style from the upper age group. He might be expecting that his HC would go up a little, but not in the swindle! Henry - still there knocking on the door of the Swindle top spot and yes its opened up for him, so straight to the top with his £6 extra. But he has to contend now with Robot back on his full HC of 9. Actually that means Ash is now below Robbo in HC terms. Not many do that. Quite a few wrong HCs used today so do please check the table before you play - how many times can we say it!! An aside: Bob Phillips was regaling us in the bar after the game with his enjoyment of his new found Virgin status - phone operator provider- and how he had already sent me the score card in a photo. I couldn't locate it when I got home so messaged - Sorry I had it in 'flight mode ' he says - bloody clever these Virgin companies - phones that fly as well......

A lovely warm morning and whilst the course is drying out (and some cracking) it was in pretty good condition. Well, the extra shot rule seems to be working, as all 3 prize winners were enjoying that position today. I played in a group with winner, Paul, earlier in the week, and we ended up deciding that after having so many good long putts just miss the hole that day, he was due to have a very good round soon, and so it happened. Sounds a good time for me to have a bet on a winner! Just need to find out how to place a bet! Anyway the good news Paul is that the cut of 3 only takes you down as far as your club HC anyway! Good scores from Geoff Brown and John Clare deservedly earned them 2nd and 3rd places. And two players on heavy cuts (Robbo 9 or 10) and Bobby D (9) also put in very good (relative) scores. And if you ever see Bobby D without his golf glove on remind him quickly about the blisters! I fear that the uncertainly we keep putting in Eammon's mind about whether he can play, or not, on a Weds, by accidentally leaving him out twice, had a major detrimental impact on his score today- Hope not E!

A very warm day, so durability was a factor. Didn't pick up much about the games today so maybe heat impacted on spirits! But another extra cut day with noted local poet, Kev, getting 40 points, so attracting the normal cut of 3, plus 1 extra for 40 or more points, and another 1 for having all done it before this year. Well done Kev. Not waving, but drowning eh! As is often the case the back nine sorted out 2nd and 3rd places with Dave S and James S both collecting 38 points, but with Dave's 21 back nine securing the 2nd place. Well done guys. Watch out for Tretty, back to his 23 HC and beginning to pile the points on again; he must be a good EW bet for a winning score soon enough. And good to see that VC Colin B had found his alarm clock and managed to join us for his 2nd ever Swindle ! Only one more Colin and you too can get in amongst the grand prizes at stake. NB And note Robbo's extra 4 points ie 32 overall from 28, on his 2nd scratch outing. At that rate of improvement its 36 and then 40! That would be worth a special prize.

Good weather conditions for golf, cloud cover and reasonably warm. Winner Bobby took advantage of his early morning start - he had asked golf-room sharing buddy Doug G to swap from his later start as - its reported - Bobby usually has a nap about the time he was supposed to start the morning. Anyway a really good score of 39 point off a HC already cut by 6 shots from his normal 20. Martin has found his form this year, scoring 37 in this one, and is now getting on the podium even whilst on a cut. So well done Martin. And the AA was in the same group ready to provide breakdown cover in case Martin blew up, but only in a supporting role of 3rd place with 35 points. Well done Allan - Those extra 2 shots have worked! Our star player had his first round off Scratch today and still managed to stay off the bottom of the scoring table. Expect to to see that score get better as he adjusts to 0. At the other end only one more 0.1 back in a comp and he is up from 9 to 10 he says! I had the pleasure of playing with with Dougie, who finally managed to get his game in the right direction, even if not all his shots, John Clare who rather put us all off the in the front nine while we adjusted our eyes to the blinding white legs on are display, and PJ who perhaps should have turned up in his PJs as he did seem rather sleepy around the course. Good fun though.

We thought there would be no golf today as rain was falling quite heavily at 7am and rain was forecast for the morning, but 13 of us turned up for coffee and behold the rain disappeared, not to trouble us for 18 holes! For most of us the golf didn't match the wonder of the weather, but that man Robot just seems to have an endless supply of Duracell batteries somewhere about his person. Perhaps it was all part of the body rebuild he had during his year as Seniors Captain? Anyway a club HC of 9 has again come down in the Swindle until he was playing off 3 today (see also write up for Monday below) and his rather excellent 37 points earned him a clear win and another cut of 3 so next week he plays off Zero - SCRATCH! Its beginning to sound like a Robson sob story, but you do have to feel for him as other winners recently have been putting rather more than £7 in their pot for a win and a cut of 3 - especially as all the dosh is going to Steve's Charity! But it does put him back on top of the Swindle table and deservedly so. He seems very determined not to give up his Swindle Crown, so the challenge is out there guys (Henry/Spiggy et al) to get some big wins in whilst he struggles with the number 0. Also, well done of course to Bill and Les who I'm sure are very happy to receive such large sums for their HC cuts!

A bit of a breezy morning, changing from warm to chilly quickly depending on cloud cover. These met office summaries are going well? But what can you say about the golf; back on 29 and H&V is hot, hot, hot again coming in with 44 points. Well done Henry. I said on the 8th June that we wouldn't hear much from HV again for at least 4 games given the harsh, but fair, 5 HC cut then. Its taken a little longer for him to get back on top, but there he is and this time he gets cut 6 shots. (I reckon 6 week this time). Roll on adjustments to club HCs I hear you all say! Taking nothing away from an excellent 41 from Ash, which gives him a 3 shot cut. You need pretty good concentration to get to that score, but I suppose its not the same as remembering to put your grandchild in the car to take them home with you when you leave the golf course after their lesson!! And finally, as he knows, I rarely feel the pain for Robot, as he has the glory of being our most consistently good golfer in the Seniors, but getting 41 off a 3 cut HC of 6 is itself damn good, but like Ash he pretty much played the B9 in scratch and would have had to play it 5(?) under scratch to get the 2nd place! Never going to happen? Never say never.......And he gets a 3 shot cut on top!

A nice warm morning and a benign course. Robbo rather upset the pattern a bit this morning - as the day had been set up for the Bs to come in as strong players at the top. Anyway another 40+ score, this time by Greg, playing a shot above his club, so it would have been 40 anyway. By all accounts it could have been 45, but so say all of us! Congratulations Greg, good play. And Robbo - well, 39 points - boring, move on - winnings haven't quite got him back to the top of the table, but good for the charity! And well done Eammon- first prize money on the Swindle table.
Next Swindle is on Monday and the Bar is open! Someone must have a birthday ???? We'll get Inspector Ash onto that.

Another rather warm morning for those that swindled. Spiggy, playing 3 below his club, shone with a 41 - his reward of £9 somewhat diminished by a cut of 5 shots (another 40 plus score earlier). At 8 below his club (so off 9) are we getting somewhere nearer his true game?? Only two other seniors play below 10, so well done for that feat. And on most days a 40 point score would have been more than good enough to claim a 1st place, but for Gunga it was just a 2nd and a cut of 3. Well done though Martin, your game seems to have taken off this year. And a very solid 39 gave Chris V a 3rd place and a cut of 1. I notice that Robbo had a very solid 35 in the swindle in the morning, then proceeded to join us at South East Essex in the afternoon for a charity game, in boiling heat, and managed to get 38 ! That's Robot technology for you....!

A blistering morning and not only the golf. Obviously an eventful day with two drop outs - hope Paul and Allan are both OK. We do seem seem to have hit an injury period recently amongst the seniors. Bad backs seem to be the in thing. Talking of injured players, a hot score of 41 from Mike Trett earned him the winners rostrum, but only £9 with fewer numbers on Weds, and a healthy cut of 5 shots (as he had a previous 40 or more score this year). Well done Mike.
Allen wasn't quite so Flash today after learning about Mike's score, but he did manage to keep Robot at bay. Mind you it took a lot of banter to distract him! Get better soon chaps.

A little cold and windy at times today compared to recently, so scores not quite getting into the 40s (or some careful HC cut management at work of course!). But a good result on 39 for 'young' Spiggy (we have all been expecting him to come in soon with his 17 HC ). Played with Bobby 'Dough' today and he maintained his good form from Wednesday despite a cut of 4 to put a score of 38 together. He obviously wasn't missing his new best pal 'Roger' or 'room partner' Dougie. Another cut of 2 shots should sort him out for a while! And well done to Les who refuses to accept the charity of extra shots in the swindle and plays off his club HC when he could play off a higher number - not for 4 games now though as he is off one below club HC. I see that Henry, having weighed the table down from the dizzy height of the top with 2 very high scoring games recently, has now generously decided to support from the bottom with 2 'consistent' lower scores! Let us know when it gets too heavy Henry!!

Yet another fine morning for golf. Another slightly smaller group for Weds but still well above norms because of the restrictions on other types of fun! More massive scores with Roger's new 'best mate' (think he actually said 'I have fallen in love with him this morning'), Bobby 'Dough', taking the 1st place prize of £12 with an amazing 45 points - with a cut of 4 shots. Fast man Richard (walk, whack, walk) must have thought that 42 points would be a winner, but whilst a great score, it only gets him 2nd place. A previous 41point score this year already, earns him an extra cut of 2; so 4 in all. And Mr IoW Bob Brookes comes in with a very good 39 points for 3rd place. ( NB Henry found out today what life at the level of Mr Average golf (20HC - down 9 shots) feels like for most of us ! - But he was valiant in his struggle!). Well played everyone today guys - some really good scoring going on.

It was another big field (33) today in really lovely sunny weather, only partly spoiled by the news as we came off that Mike Trett had been taken poorly; but fortunately as we later learned he is absolutely fine. He is later alleged to have confirmed (by a top source - Hughes News Agency?) that it was not a reaction to finding that his 38 points was only good enough for a 5th place!
So it was another high scoring game, with an excellent win for bandito Ian Patterson in his first Swindle of this year. 6 months of practice before appearing - what some people will do to make a grand entrance! With Dave boy Skinner in 2nd place, but only separated by a couple of back nine points. (Only fair as his 38 in the last game got him Nothing.). And in 3rd was Rich (although not on his £7 of winnings) Stephenson with a very good 39 - a score that would usually get a better result. Well done to those guys.

A fantastic score of 44 in the Swindle from Doug (Taxi) 'Fare'Banks Jr. (only here to enjoy it as he says) gave him a clear win over birthday boy Bill, who had an excellent 40 points today. Even Captain Vice, Colin, turned up to play on Bill's special day. Bill very kindly passed around beers to celebrate his 67? Young at heart. Extra cuts for those guys because of the 40 and more rule (3 +1 extra for Doug). Unfortunately for Bill he had a 40 round earlier in the year so its a cut of 2 +2 for him! Birthday surprises eh! Allan A came in with a very good 38 to secure 3rd place. Well done to all those.
(NB Colin Brown actually had the 3rd place score but of course can't win anything until he has played 3 swindles! But in line with our rules if he comes along again he does have the pleasure of a cut applied!)
And as you know Graham had organised the included team event (Results below) and even did the 'Math' (sic.) to determine the winning team for the day, which included two of today's top scorers (Doug and Dave Skinner). Oh and Joe, otherwise now known as the King of WhatsApp. Prizes will be given out later in the year when we are able to do so.

Rather different weather to the recent norm. The very heavy rainfall mid-game decided it for the majority, but a number of stalwarts battled onto the end. In the absence of clear rules about counting or not counting results in such circumstances the Swindle Organiser made a decision for the day that the result would stand, but has set out a new rule to be applied in any similar circumstances in the future. Having said that, congratulations to Dave Cormack on an excellent 41 points in such conditions (he has been in secret training coached by Barbs!), and to Ash with a very good 39 in 2nd (he needed a boost) and of course to Robot Robson on keeping up his very high average scoring, despite suffering cuts, to secure 3d place (his winning to the Captains Charity).

Overall scores still fairly modest, apart from the runaway winner, although many are now on cuts. But a big well done to Henry V, who with his 2nd win in a matter of days, has secured as many victories over WP, as the original HV secured over France! Well done also to Kevin and Winsey (a 2nd and a 3rd place already - I'm coming back he says!) ).
But the real news is that having had two 40 pointers HV is now facing a further cut of 5 shots! We won't be hearing much from him for 4 games...... will we?

Well done also to Kevin and Winsey (a 2nd and a 3rd place already - I'm coming back he says!) ).
But the real news is that having had two 40 pointers HV is now facing a further cut of 5 shots! We won't be hearing much from him for 4 games...... will we?

Conditions rather different today than the past few weeks! Well played to me then! Although I cannot say I expected that result with 35 points. I played with 2nd place Dave also with 35 and between us those scores included a lot of missed shortish putts, more Dave than me I think, so it could easily have been very different. Well done also to Bill, back with his golfing heart in the right place!

Very well played to Henry with an excellent 40 as winner on the day. Robot Robbo cut 1 on Monday for 39 and so of course scores only I less ie 38 on Wednesday - amazing consistency and another £8 to Steve; and well done to Winsey in there with the best (NB we found your [someone said it was yours] comb on the 15th, but of course couldn't pick it up for you!).

Very well done to Greg - continuing a score of over 40 for the swindle winner. Special congratulations to Mike Trett who narrowly missed out on a place and cash in the last swindle with a score of 39; obviously managed to keep the form going with a very good 40. Both players get the 40 or more extra cut! And of cause Robbo back on full handicap with his usual good score - this time 39 - £7 more to the Captain Steve's Charity so good for him. We welcomed Peter Clayden to his first swindle today - he plans to play with us regularly on Mondays. See Weds draw on the draws page.

Very well done to Dave - excellent score of 44, although playing one above his club HC. Not sure the cut of 4 is enough to keep him out of the next round of prizes! Three very good 39s to follow with Martin and Bob just easing out Mike. A big field will be in place for Monday so competition is hotting up!
