Swindle End of Year Report 2017
(The table of results is set out below).
For the second year running Graham (Robot) Robson topped the table and has again earned himself the “Swindler of the Year ‘ title. Well done to Graham who, despite having his club handicap reduced from 10 to 7 over the year and having to deal with a changed swindle handicap system, managed to maintain his extremely high standard of golf and stay in front.
Congratulations also to Dennis O’Neill who also saw his club handicap cut 3 over the year, and made a strong play for the top place, but finally finished a very creditable 2nd in his first year, only £9 behind.
Some 90 swindles took place over the year. That compares to only 64 in the previous year. Either better weather, or hardier players!
56 players took part over the year, which was 8 up on last year. 32 of those players notched up the 15, or more, games and so were eligible for the SOY Trophy. 40 players managed at least 10 games.
The average number of games played per senior was 21 and the average number of players in each game was 13. The largest group was 23 on two occasions. 2 seniors played over 60 times (Graham Robson and Barry MacKay). 2 seniors played over 50 times (Dennis O’Neill and Doug Garvey)
We put a total of £1,166 pounds in and out of the kitty this year. 27 players ended up the year even, or with positive balances (highest £42), so 29 were unfortunately negative in terms of winnings (lowest -£28: It will be your year next year Dave (Skeels))! The max 1st place prize was £11 (twice).
The highest average score (those playing 15 or more games) was Graham Robson’s excellent average of 33 over 61 games (playing on a handicap range of 10 to as low as 3 after swindle cuts). That compares to the average for all players and all games of 30.
There were a total of 31 scores of 40 or more points over the year by 16 players (Each a lucky recipient of a ‘Swindlers’ 40+ Club’ marker – which was a one year only club so those markers are special!!). A number had more than one score of 40, but two had 4 such scores – Graham Robson and Bob Doe. 2 players had scores of 45 (Will Gilley and Gordon Allen). I will be looking to adjust further the current extra swindle cut of 1 next year for players that achieve more than one score of 40 - I know how to punish myself!.
As you might expect Robot topped the wins and places table with 9 wins and 13 places. Barry M was 2nd with 7 wins and 12 places and Dennis 3rd with 7 wins and 10 places. 32 players managed to get at least one 1st place. Leaving aside those players who turned up only once or twice, only one player didn’t get any kind of place during the year (Sorry Martin, but you did join us later in the year and we will be rooting for you next year!).
We also had three ‘hole-in-ones’ during swindle games. Kim, Barry and Bob (D) each received a ‘Swindler’s Hole-in-One’ ball- again a one year only offer and thus a very exclusive club. Look out for the new club offers next year!
All in all a very successful year, with more seniors taking part, more swindle days played, and some very active new members who have joined in the fun and banter and helped keep things fresh!
A thanks to those who helped out with cards, money and scores etc when I wasn’t around, which will next be for three weeks in January!
Happy golfing!
Gordon
