2023 Swindle - Daily Results and Reports
Final 'Fun' Swindle of 2023 Friday 29th Dec
No sponsors for today so we just played for the usual £1s.
A couple of drop outs for medical reasons etc and of course a case of a claret and blue bashing, causing Winesy to drop out (his back he said!), reduced us to 9 players. Kev came and took the flack!
The course had dried out a bit from the Weds outing, but was still rather muddy, although the weather was the kindest its been for a while.
So scoring was a little better, but the battle of the 39s was won on the back 9 score by Dennis over Ken. Dennis' 3/4 birdie on the 16th helped. The star hole of the day though was Kev's 4/5 on the 13th.
But squad tee shots went to the Ash/Bill/Gordon on the 8th with this display! But not one birdie!!

But coming back to the Hammers, to be fair to Winesy he did show up after the golf to have a rational discussion (and a drink) about why Arsenal had unbelievably lost their game against WHU!! Sharpie had the biggest smile, which he claimed would stay around for quite a bit whilst in Winesy and Kev's company!
Dennis generously donated his £9 winnings to Mike's Charity fund for 2024.
According to my calculations that means we raised £117 during the December games. And noted that Dennis' wins meant that he contributed nearly a 1/3rd of that (£36).
And so endeth golf for 2023. All due to restart 'proper' on Weds 3rd Jan, with some new rules!

Actually Dennis has shown some good form in this last month or so. During Nov-Dec he has scored higher than me in games : 11-4 - unfortunately for him the Season ended with the Swindle on 30/11 and overall I'd racked up a commanding lead in our annual 'head to head for the balls' comp. I'm going to enjoy using these at the start of the season!!! Thanks Dennis! 2024 must be your year??
Seniors Golf Weds 27th Dec 23
No special 'swindle' game arranged for today as the club had their mid week Xmas Stableford running off the black tees which most of our 9 players wanted to enter.
So we had 3 by 3 balls out, 8 of which played in the comp.
With the amount of rain the day before, the course was drenched and conditions 'hazardous'! So scores generally were lower (and playing off the blacks of course), but it was good to see how well some of the seniors performed against 'all comers' within the club (as an open age comp). Particularly Ash who with a 38 took 2nd place and Dennis in 3rd, albeit a little surprised to have done so well with a 35. Well done guys. Full results below.
There was a 'unusual ball' case that is on that webpage.
NB Chris Vander won the alternative game! Always good to beat yourself!

A Charity Fun Comp Sponsored by Gordon and Bill Fri 22nd th Dec 23
A good number of players turned up, which no doubt included those going missing from yet another pre Christmas shopping trip! Weather kind and so no excuses for poor golf.
Our 4 ball ended up taking the 4 top places on the day and included a very friendly, but excellent match for coffee. Dennis's bandit territory 45 certainly helped us just take the win from the KKs, but it took to the last hole. My birdie helped!
Don unfortunately had to retire with his back - I put it down to sitting in card schools all day. Hope its doesn't spoil Xmas Don.
Bill and I put up some prizes so excluded ourselves from winning anything (although technically I won Bill's wine on the 18th NP) and he won my wine on the BF9 score!!
Dennis of course took top spot with his 45 points - played excellently - with some balls and ball towels.
Kim found some great form with his 40 and took a Wine prize for BB9.
Bill had the shared, but winning BF9 with two others, but declined his Wine prize so it went o Spiggy over Dave S.
NP as mentioned was me, but declined of course; 2nd was Dennis , who had a prize, 3rd was Kim, who also had a prize, and there were no others that got on the green! ! So as Kev was sitting next to me and was the only one in our 4 ball who hadn't won anything he got the balls!
And another £14 to Mike's Charity so Good game , Good game, as Brucie used to say!
Merry Christmas to all.

A Charity Fun Comp Sponsored by Grumpy (Handley) Weds 20th Dec 23
Despite the prospect of more fun prizes to be won, sponsored by Grumpy Dave (his 'handle' he says - haven't asked why he gets called that?), we had a relatively small group planning to play. But that reduced even further late on when we learned that it would be carry only. Some of our seniors can't bear to carry the weight of the world and so it was on the cards (literally) that some would drop out. So the magnificent 7 finally went out to play.
Dave's carefully explained the game. Stableford, but you can elect to play a joker on 3 holes on which you can double the score. However, if you don't score you get deducted 3 points. We all got that and out we went. As it was holiday week, early green fees were out so the pace of play wasn't great.
All in unscathed and with some impressive sounding scores. Two 46s -Bill and Dennis, but with Dennis on a better back nine. We thought. But a closer review by Dave revealed that our group hadn't applied the 3 points deduction correctly. We discovered that it was supposed to be applied to any blob hole, not just the Joker holes! Ah, but as there had been a general misunderstanding about that Dave just readjusted his 3 ball scores, which put Bill on 49. So new leader Bill. (Dennis would have lost 12 points from his card under the other system anyway!). Does this level of confusion seem familiar Seniors?
Anyway, a nice bottle of French wine for Bill, a couple of sleeves of balls for Dennis for 2nd and a nice bottle of wine for Flash (aka Sue) and some balls [ for 3rd and nearest the pin], but everyone got a sleeves of balls anyway! And the £7 to Mike for his charity.
Dave's score of 45 (no blobs) was actually of course 2nd highest under his game plan, but as with all sponsors he declined to give himself one of his own prizes).
It was pointed out that Dave's generous prizes far outstripped the numbers we had playing, but he did suggest that he needed to clear his garage of accumulated prizes of his own in order to get his car in for the winter!
A good social morning of golf and a shame that more couldn't take part.

A Charity Fun Comp Sponsored by Kev- Fri 15th Dec 23
Trollies back on (very surprisingly) so a full house of 11 signed up to play went out. The course was quite reasonable and we had welcome mild weather.
Kev was sponsoring and was determined that the 3s game be played for the main prize. For those that don't know what 3s is (which is everyone) you score on every third hole. Took a little while for that to sink in, but we all got there in the end.
By the time our final group got in at the end the two groups in front had had their coffee and were on their Friday beers.
Kev decided that he couldn't take his own prizes so we moved the results all down one. That would have meant a clean sweep as G had 1st in overall, 3s and NP on the 18th. So a quick huddle, agreement that no one could have more than one prize and it was it was decided that the 3s winner would have 1st pick of prizes. Based on back nine scores Dennis got 2nd pick and Ray would get the NP 3rd, left over, pick. No no says Ray I can't win anything. Why not Ray your on the NP card? Well, "somebody", put 3 names on there didn't they Kev! None of course who actually got on the green at all! I share this so no one gets caught for out for a 3rd time. You have been warned Kev. Ray being lead astray again. So revert to G 1st, Dennis 2nd, and Bill 3rd based on scores. Dennis was caught several times trying to take the balls over the wine despite not having 1st choice. Having examined the balls and checked that they had Ken written on them I let him take them!
Bill and I received a lovely bottle of wine.
Thanks Kev. The £11 pot joins the rest of the cash raised so far in Dec for Mike's charity. That's about £80 so far.

A Charity Fun Comp Sponsored by Dennis - Weds 13th Dec 23
Wet underfoot, drizzly rain falling overhead, but 9 of the 13 decided to give it a try. There was no dissent from coming in after 9 holes though!
It was going to be a Dennis and Gordon sponsored event, but with just 9 involved it was left for Dennis to put up the wine.
Most carried fewer clubs, but some still managed to score pretty well over the 9 holes.
Ray was announced as the winner and took the wine with pleasure. At some point in all the banter Ray's score of 18 was mentioned! "No" says Ray, looking very quizzical, "I didn't get 18" ? Recount demanded. A 4-2 on the card for hole 8 had missed the 1st ball in the 'drink', so a quick review re-allocated the bottle to Mike ~T. Honestly will be always be rewarded!
Another £9 added to Mike's Charity for 2024. It adds up, so well done for all have taken part so far.
Kev was offering huge prizes for Friday's sponsored game, but only if you can keep track of scores for every third hole ie 3,6,9,12,15,18.
Message for Winesy - Your mates decided on your behalf that you will be required to put in some HC cards early in the new playing season. You have to understand that the level of guilt that your mates feel every week taking your pounds is causing everyone else great stress, and your kindest act would be to put them out of their misery and return them to a stress free life!

A Charity Fun Comp Sponsored by Chris - Fri 8th Dec 23
Numbers had reduced before the day arrived and we ended up with 14 playing, but with 2 playing a singles match, who decided to go out first, so we had 12 in the full game. Our sponsor Chris had decided on a 4 clubs and a putter game with a 1st place and a nearest the pin in 2 on the 17th.
Winesy had previously donated a bottle of wine for one of the games, so we added a NP on the 18th.
Although Bill was in the match (v Wilco) he decided to put his £1 in and take a chance on winning a bottle!
Warmer than of late, but very wet from the previous day’s heavy rain, conditions weren’t ideal, but not bad enough to stop some very good scores with just the 4 clubs.
No big stories coming in from the course although when we, as the 1st group, got to the18th we saw a pretty close marker near the hole. That 1st out man, Bill, must have got in there we assumed. Kim and Ray were on the green with their shots, but some way back from the marker so neither bothered to record positions. Putting out for their 3s it was then noticed that there was no name on the marker! Some approximations had to be made! Investigations into the culprit would follow.
Coming to the scores we had two 39 pointers. Spiggy and Dennis. Spigs did the back nine in an excellent one under par, with 24 points (off 14) and that was good enough to demote Dennis to 2nd, who had a B9 of 19. We all know that the front 9 is harder though Dennis!
So Spiggy got the nice bottle of Port that Chris had put up for 1st.
Nearest the pin in 2 on the 17th was Dennis, who received a bottle of red from Chris.
Ash came in last and took the 18th away from Ray, winning Winesy’s white wine.
As a non drinker Spiggy said the Port wouldn’t be a popular drink around his pals etc, but said his good friend and ex wife would very much enjoy the white wine Ash had won. So they did a swap. I asked Spiggy (with some deliberation) what he thought about the white wine and its strength - he gave me the benefit to his great knowledge on that, indicating that its was a good variety and was usually around 12—13%. I asked him to read the label. 0% Non alcoholic!! Ash was beaming at his bargain swap! Not that he’d realised that fact at the time! Good old Winesy trick- although he did say he won it somewhere else himself!
That other famous non-drinker Dennis, having admired and displayed his win, then generously offered the red wine back as a future prize. So more to come. I’m thinking about whether we need a card index system to record the past owners of our wine prizes, as I’m sure we see Ash’s away day bottles re-circulating quite a bit!
So heareth ends a story of golf and booze.
Another £13 for Mike’s charity - thanks for supporting Chris.
NB Wilco was identified as the 18th hole spoiler - he will need to watch his back!

A Charity Fun Comp Sponsored by Don - Weds 6th Dec 23
Another frosty start for 13 brave souls. The honour of the draw was given to Dennis (Ed. asking for trouble!). With three 3 balls and a four ball at the end. Only himself to blame when his ball failed to appear in the first nine drawn.
I played with Mike T & Dave C. Mike had a steady front 9 with 17 points. However, he went to town on the back 9 with a magnificent score of 27 points (2x4, 5x3, 2x2). Bandit of the Year was the chat in the clubhouse afterwards. !! Well done Mike.
As usual a score of 40 points today would not have made the top three. Commiserations to Ash and Dave S. with excellent scores of 43 & 41 respectively. All the winnings handed to Mike who no doubt will donate this to his Prostate Charity. Also, a big thanks to Don for his generous donation by matching the £13 kitty, for a very worthwhile cause.

A Charity Fun Comp with Prizes Sponsored by Roger T - Monday 4th Dec 23
A good field of 20 swindlers on a day the weather forecasters had been threatening rain. Damp and a bit chilly to start, but we got away with it until a light drizzle late in the morning, so all good. One single KO match took place within the swindle Belly and Tim, which got resolved on the final hole with a win by Belly.
Some good overall scores at the top with, as usual, the back nine being used to mount the scores. Tale told that G struggled with his driving on the front nine, starting early on the 1st tee. A vicious swing, but deftly struck tee shot, looped the ball high, which with some grace landed softly in-between the roots up against the adjacent tree - some 10 feet away. I say 'deftly' as the ball probably looped more on wind power than by contact with the metal. Anyway Kev was determined to get the photo for the comp, which appears on on the website, although perhaps we should have considered purchasing him a photography course for Xmas. His game needs a bit of work there!
'Roger the sponsor' had elected for Drinks prizes for the nearest the pin in 2 on the 11th and for the best total par 3 scores. In keeping with the general policy of not winning your own prizes RT generously, but obviously threw his par thee holes.
Three 39s separated by the B9 scores, gave Ash the overall win for the day - with a 50/50 split for winner and charity, Ash was offered his £10 prize, but very generously gave it to Mike for the charity - so another £20 for Mike to bank for his good cause.
Dave H won the N the P in 2, on the 11th, with a tee shot that just fractionally missed going in - its marker did of course get in the way of the rest of our balls which I'm sure was unfortunate!
It was also a a very close thing of the best total par 3s score with 3 players on 10 points. Roger had a bit of head scratching on that one, but in the end it was decided on a form of count-back which gave it to Belly.
All to be repeated Weds.

A Charity Fun Comp Sponsored by Gordon - Friday 1st December 23
A well planned ‘fun’ charity golf day with sponsored prizes by GA was all set up!
Rarely, our days are a complete wash out - today it was a frost, ice and snow wash out.
18 players on the original list. A couple of drop outs just before the day so down to 16. Then 2 early morning ‘wimpy’ drop outs and one genuine ‘battery had gone flat’ drop out - assume Roger meant his car and not his own! Hopefully all fixed.
So we had 13 gathered at the club. Dennis was enjoying his birthday with some sunshine on the end of his club, despite the ice and snow on the course. The tears on his driver cover would turn into smiles by the time the day was over.

The competition and prizes plans were adjusted to match the limited field going out, scaled down to simple stableford 1st and 2nd places and a nearest the pin on the 18th.
So well wrapped up, out we went. After 4 holes 3 were back in the clubhouse, after 11 holes 6 were in the clubhouse. They had some justification for leaving the field of play as it was a day of pot luck, which may explain the result!

But the remaining 7 had all read the Bear Grylls survival book and completed the course. All put their £1s in so we still had £13 for Mike’s charity.
Dave S potentially had a very good entry for the ‘unusual ball ending ‘ comp, but with surprisingly quick reflexes in the cold had whisked his ball from the grip of the conifer tree on the 5th before we got the photo! No photo - no entry.
Dennis certainly had an entry for his birthday diary. Having just engineered a good birdie on the 17th hole, he went on with confidence to drive his ball on the 18th hole, which was for the N the P. Not his best, very low, down the hill, across the iced over pond and UP over the high lip of the bank to finish just below the bunker on the left - how it managed to get up and over the lip of the pond is a physics mystery! Dave S's turn and lovely shot it was hitting the middle of the green - only to finish up near the fence! Gordon thought he had worked out that the trick would be to bounce the ball into the bunker on to the green. First part went perfectly - 2nd part saw the ball bounce out right rather than forward. Birthday boy Dennis got a par of course for, in the conditions, a surprising 38 points and the day's winning score.
RF kept his good form going with a 2nd place 35 points.
Given the level of drop outs, the prizes were scaled back even further to just a 1st and N the P.
But with no one managing to stop a ball on a frozen green even that wasn't awarded! The prizes live to fight another day.

Results for Final 2023 Swindle - Weds 30th November 2023
16 of us down to play, with a doubles KO being part of that. 3 of the KO players also wished to play in the swindle so we had 15 to take part. Now, we're not sure, but John P may have made a final calculation the day before and worked out that if he played and won, there was a chance he could sneak in on the GOY title. Anyway, he wasn't on the list, but there he was with his ball. The leading challengers tried to cite rule breaking to reduce the opposition, but our inclusivity policy won out! So 16 swindlers went out to play with 5 players in the final battle for the title. One of those (Ash) was in the match, which left a perfect 4 ball to play at the end and get the opportunity to psych each other out.
A cold start, but turning out a very bright and fresh day, conditions were ideal.
A photo opportunity arose on the 10th when Kim's ball found itself located in the only bush still left separating it from the 11th - mine actually hit the same spot, but got through! See the 'unusual ball endings page'.
It would seem the 'psych'ing' out part worked a bit too well, as none of the 5 players managed to get in the top 3 positions for a payout. The group got also a little detached from the 3 balls in front and so the others had a bit of a wait to find out how they had got on - as a number had good scores they stayed on anyway! Where was Dennis?
We were delighted that Robbo had made the journey to announce the final game's results and declare the 2023 Swindler of the Year Winner.
Mike Pearse had obviously timed his year perfectly and came in with a 42 point score to take 1st place, but as it was the final game there are of course no cuts to endure! Well done Mike. A few handicap cards needed for next year's battle.
Despite not being able to hit the ball straight, Kim came in with a very good 40 points to take 2nd, with new Captain in waiting Mike T taking 3rd with 39 points.
Kev was in the 3 ball with the two winning Mike's and couldn't quite believe that he was the only one with no prize - after all his Mike work this year has been plenty good enough to win something!
Table leader Richard Fisher's 38 points was just not quite good enough to get in the money on the day, but ..........with drum rolls Robbo announced that Richard had nevertheless taken the title with a positive net table score of £25, with Ash and Dave Skinner in joint 2nd place on £22.
Well done all.

Replacement FUN GAME on Turkey Trott Day - Results for Mon 27th November 2023
Rain, rain and more rain and the Turkey got drowned. Turkey Trott cancelled (right decision) , but a lot of willing golfers still looking for a game. So 8 decided to go out anyway. As most had only brought the 3 clubs and a putter we stuck to the original game plan. No swindle as a) fewer clubs and b) would have been unfair on those who didn't know there would be the option of one. So it was course HCs and a single prize.
A little lightish rain at the start, but that soon cleared and the round was pretty uneventful weather wise, although a gas mask would have been a good extra given the amount of smoke being generated by the burning timber piles around the course. My wife Sue always says I'm unstoppable in the garden when I start cutting back with the electric saw, leaving bare stumps (they always grow back!) and it's beginning to feel like that out on the course.
After the scoring, some of us have got to review why we carry so many clubs in our bags. The first group coming in with 2 x 38s must have thought they were looking good. But the 42 dashed their hopes.
In keeping with the December ethos of at least 50% of the winnings going to charity they were donated to Mike to start the 2024 pot.
No cuts and hopefully we'll get the Weds Swindle game in for the decider of who becomes Swindler of the Year.

A very large turn out of 23 for a cold November day, although there were 3 singles KO matches taking place at the same time as swindle games. Not freezing, but certainly the coldest golf day this year?
It was certainly a day for injuries playing their part. Roger left the field of play after 14, Don didn't make it into the clubhouse at the end, Ken left quickly in great pain, Ash's ankle failed to support a good score - no doubt there were more I failed to hear about.....perhaps we should have a recruiting drive to bring in a golfing doctor among us?
Given my 5 shot cut after Weds, none of the 4 ball I was in (Kim, Kev and Ray) was keen to have me as their doubles/coffee partner (the pathos bit), but Ray was lucky enough to get me. As a 42 point scorer on Weds I was able to guide him through 18 with lots of instruction and with great success to his excellent 42 point win! We were up in the match pretty much throughout, but on 18 Kev (obviously in frustration at looking defeat in the face) whacked his putt and .... it hit the flag and dropped for a unexpected birdie! So all square!
Rays 42 points (he did play very well) got him a cut of 3+1, but also another 4 for the 42s or more he has had this year - so cut of 8 in all. But luckily for him only for one final game! His £11 was a good payout, but doesn't move him into contention, unless he can find another big win.
Our occasional VIP player Dave H came in for his singles and amassed an excellent 39 points off his 8 HC to take 2nd place.
Dave Skinner took 3rd place with a very good 38, especially as he was playing off 16 HC rather than his usual 22. Just a 1 shot cut.
Ash apparently didn't have his best game, but did add interest with a shot that gave him an entry into the 'ball in unusual place' competition. It didn't look up to much though!!

Drop outs and add ins, with a late request from Steve A, who obviously came last in the stragglers and so got ousted by his mates to join us (very welcome he was of course) gave us 17 swindlers and one additional single KO match player (Dave Oakley to play Gordon), so 18 in all.
Could have been a big moving day for the swindle lead, but in the end it moved just a little - very much in Richard Fs favour though.
Dennis and I did our best to keep RF out of the prize money, with two 42 pointers. G got it the 1st place on the BB9, although there was some controversy about a claim that G had been given a rather long putt on one hole, whereas Dennis claimed that he had been offered a gimme putt, but that as G was on the next tee he might notice, putted it and missed! But as Dennis so often says - something about a 'faint heart never won fair maiden' (although there is one more word in that) - so I'm more than happy to be bold and take the win on the scorecard.
But coming back to RF, I'm afraid Don let us down, despite getting 3 4 pointers (!) on the back nine (4 across 18) for his score of 39, which allowed RF to creep into 3rd place and get the 3rd spot. But a good try Don.
So end result, GA cut 5 shots, Dennis cut 3 shots and Richard cut 1 shot. RF has now edged himself in a clear lead of £2 (points) on top of the table.
We should sometime mention the achievements of others - John Cs games often don't show much above the radar as he doesn't often get comp or swindle wins, or the occasional grand scores of others, but as one of our genuine lower handicappers he consistently puts in very good HC playing scores. A very good 38 today John.

A good turn out for a Nov Weds with 18 playing. Terry hadn't quite got the hang of the turn up and ball draw by 7.40 but we coped with that!
The threat of early morning rain failed to materialise and a good, dry and warm morning was enjoyed. The two big SoY contenders (Ash and Richard F) weren't in the field so it was open to others to try and make some leeway to the top.
And Dave S and Bill certainly did that with their 40 points for 1st and 39 points for 2nd, earning them £9 and a 3 shot cut, and £6 and a 2 shot cut respectively. Dennis's 38 points (Cut 1 for £3) was just good enough to hold off Dave C, who is making his comeback after joining the Hip club.
Bill and Dave C had a bit of an easy time of it in winning our doubles for coffee as Spiggy had little help from me!

An original 17 gradually dwindled to just 9 on the day - weather and carry only the main reasons. Given the recent heavily rain the course was in reasonable condition - we have seen worse out there with our trollies!
RF joint leader was clocking up his 14 of the 15 min outings and hoped to get in the cash. Just missed out. Joint Lead Ash down on 9 HC didn't really expect to be in the frame for cash, but as both lost a pound (point) all remains the same at the top.
An excellent round of 40 by John P earned him £6 and a cut of 2. Dave S and I offered JP a gimme on the 18th if he just got the ball on the green (for a 4 pointer and a cut of 6 (2 + 4), but he failed to do that - wonder why! A JP quote to come back to in 2024, " I plan to get my HC down next year". Yes please John !! Dave S took 2nd with a good 37 edging out both RF and KS.

A bit late writing this so the memory of events on Friday has diminished! There was a good turn out given the recent poor weather, although some Swindle table leaders weren't taking part and others were on cuts, some heavy! So the opportunity to get a result and put some money points on the table was open to others. When the cards came in we had 3 players on 40 points, with two having back nines of 22. A quick check revealed that one had been added incorrectly so we had two on 40. Greg just managed to edge out Mike Tringham with a B9 of 22 against 18. Dave Skinner took 3rd place with a 38. All very good scores.
Must give a mention to Bill French who playing off 13, 9 shots below his Course HC scored an excellent 35 - or 44 point equivalent!

After a great deal of rain for a few days 14 still arrived determined to play golf.
A rare dry day, with some sun made for a good outing, with the course not as wet and muddy as expected, but with water levels at their highest for a long time.
The extra rest Ash got through a lie in, a late arrival and being allocated to the last group, might be the new 'preparedness training process' for playing your best golf. His 42 points off 14 was certainly an excellent performance and well ahead of 2nd place John C on 37. Kim has often said that he comes 3rd in his household, after his wife and the dog (well he doesn't have a dog, but...it fits). It's a bit like that in golf now. The 3rd place seems to be his at the moment. But this time he gets a cut of 1 for his 34 points.
At the other end of the scale was the Allen approach of getting there early to organise and allocating himself a place in the first group and finding the lowest level of form for ....some time! Had to leave early so thanks to Ray for sorting out the cards etc at the end.

No stories fed back from Weds game other than that a few dropped out because of the threatened rain etc and then, as is often the case, it never arrived!
Richard F brought in the best score with a 40 in his 13th game of the year. That takes him (just) to the top of the table and he has only 2 more games to play to be in contention the SoY title. Watch him.......as only a 2 shot cut for that 40.
After a lot of confusion about played HCs and Table HCs with Dave S initially being Red carded by the remote checker, it had to be conceded that he was correct and that his score of 36 was justified and so took 2nd place with a 1 shot cut.
Kim got his pound back, which had devalued by 5% during the game.
There will be a strict audit of the table, course HCs and Swindle HCs before the next outing. Anyone playing off the correct HC will get rewarded with a star against their name. Three stars in a row will earn you a special privilege that Robbo will decide. It might for instance be a 4th star......
NB I have left all HCs used on Weds as recorded on the cards (other than Kims which might have affected the result).

Results for Wednesday 18th October 2023 (Played at Top Meadow)
A ladies take over for the day at WP meant an offsite swindle.
The usual bargain basement deal at Top Meadow of a full English and golf for £20 went down very well.
Although it was said all along it would be a 'Swindle' there was still some confusion about which HCs to use! Slightly more confused when I decided that the Donated Dennis's Vin Blanc should be given to the person with the highest score playing the TM course HC. I think we got there though.
It seemed a bit like at home at times, as there were so many other golfers that we knew playing from our friendly matches, Seniors Opens and even old WP pal Allan Appleby came over to say hello to those he saw.
It was a bit of a blowy day, but the rain was kind, saving itself for later in the day.
But it was a low scoring day, excusable for some who were playing off quite significant cuts. My own excuse for a 9 point score on the front nine was tight pants. I remarked on it to Simon as we started and realised my mistake - so I thought I'd mention it here where I get to have editorial control! I'm convinced that Sue had washed and put a pair of my grandson's pants in my draw, and getting dressed in the dark I'd pulled them on !! Anyway enough said about that.
Honours for the day went to Sharpie who managed a very credible 36 points and got the 3 shot cut for £8 (flat course, still running well, you know the game!), and to a shocked Dennis whose 32 score earned him £5 a very welcome cut of 2 to take him to 16. Belly just managed to extract himself from the 31 group to take 3rd with a slightly better back 9.
The Wine went to Ken who scored 40 points playing off the TM course handicap, which was well above what anyone else managed.

16 became 15 as Winesy had an early morning plumbing emergency to deal with at home.
With the weather due to be rather inclement for the rest of the week everyone was keen to enjoy a rain free round with plenty of points. It was good to see six or seven people putting cards in, although we will wait and see whether they will be recorded in our handicap record. Tomorrow morning will tell!!!
A couple of things worthy of mention occurred in our fourball. Don and I were playing against Richard F and Ray. With Richard and Ray two up after four holes they approached the fifth brimming with confidence and remarking that the could taste the coffee already.
As we all know this game has a habit of biting you in the a**e. Minutes later Richard's ball was well and truly stuck in a tree (hopefully Gordon will produce the photographic evidence!!!) and Ray's trolley was racing towards the bushes by the 6th tee. Needless to say they lost that hole and the next two and although they recovered their composure they eventually lost 4 and 3 to a birdie on Slippery. As you can imagine Don and I enjoyed our coffees!1!

With Robbo feeling under the weather there were 10 swindlers. The tee planning and timing for the day was rather up and down, but in the end we were told be off before 8.04 and all will be fine! Playing in the 4 ball at the end, we were therefore a little surprised to see 2 buggies whizz down the side of the 2nd fairway as we were playing it, apparently heading for the 3rd tee. The 3 ball in front of us were just coming off the 2nd green and asked what was happening? Lloyds of London big group - some had been told to get to first few tees for a sort of mixed shotgun-1st tee start!! Not their fault, but decidedly odd. So we played all the way round with that 4 ball between us and the 2nd 3 ball. Anyway pace of play was pretty good and the weather brightened and warmed up so all good.
Ray was playing in the 1st 3 ball with no distractions and somehow (no doubt through brilliant golf) managed to soak up a large part of the points that might have been scored by his two playing partners - 45 points for one and 49 aggregated points for two! A really good score. Well done to Ray. But rightly heavily punished with the usual 2 shot cut plus 4 more for lots of 42 plus scores this year. There are so many potential candidates for BANDIT of the year!
The 2nd group of 3 obviously played some solid golf with good average scores in the early - mid 30s.
In our 4 ball, Mike Tringham, his golf boosted by playing with a 'proper' golfer (Delray) on the Weds mixed day, which included his confident rehearsal for Captaincy in the yet again absence of our figurehead Captain Kev (allegedly 'babysitting in Bermuda !!), played extremely well garnering a strategic 41 points to take the 2nd spot.
Spiggy and I played against Mike and Ash in our 'coffee' match and it seemed very close even though we went to 3 down at the turn. We made a decided comeback on the 2nd nine, but even my 2 birdies didn't really make a big dent.
We did notice that a golf course artist had been to work on the 13th fairway around the 'bumps' with a very lovely close cut patterned form being created around them. Shame they don't have a rake was well to get in one or two bunkers!

There are some things that are said that come back to bite those who said them on the arse. For example the infamous Alan Hansen line about Alex Ferguson's team selection at Manchester United when he said "You don't win anything with kids"
Well now you can add my line " You don't win anything in the Warley Park swindle without getting 40 points!!!!
Today saw the most incredible scoring in the swindle for many a year. I remember playing with Spiggy recently when he remarked that when he first started playing with the Seniors he regularly picked up prize money with 34 points. Well, 10 years further on and five players had to be separated on countback after all scoring 34 points. Congratulations, firstly to Don for a very good 33 points playing off 9 less than his course handicap and also to Dennis, Les and Bill for taking the prize money. I am not too sure that Bill was actually deliriously happy with his 3rd place earning him £2 and a one point cut - especially as he was already playing off 8 less than his course handicap.
Two questions to ponder over
Why are playing Winter Rules as from Monday 2nd October?
Will Hole 6 remain as Stroke Index 1?

With Robbo away celebrating his mother’s 90th birthday it was left to me to organise the swindle. Turned up with no bag, but fortunately Wayne was unpacking ‘goods’ so any old box with do.
The weather was very kind to us and most were soon down to shirts.
There were quite a few playing off quite heavy cuts, but with good conditions, good scores were expected and scoring was good, although only one player managed to break the 40, or indeed the 42 plus, barrier. Don was the man of the day with a 42, so cut 5 for his £8.
There was a trio of 39s behind. Gordon just pipped it from Winesy on BB6 - the trick is to get your 4 pointer towards the end of the back nine, not at the start! So Gordon gets a 2 shot cut for £5 and Winesy £2 for a 1 shot cut. Unfortunately, Chris’s 39 earned him no more than a ‘well done’!
But the best 9 hole score was undoubtedly that of Mike P with his 26 on the back nine. As he was one half of the pair with Les, that Bill and I played against for coffee in our match, it did mean that we struggled to get the right result!
Back to normal for Friday.

A much fresher morning than of late saw 17 Seniors frantically looking for an extra layer or two in order to keep the chill off. Fortunately, the longer the morning went on the better the weather became and the back nine was played in hazy sunshine and polo shirts.
For no unknown reason the scores were much lower than usual with no one getting 40 points or more and the winning score being only 37 poInts. Maybe the reduced amount of roll following the rain may have something to do with it.
I
played with Les and Bill who both played much better than I did. In fact the highlight of my round was the swallow dive I did after losing my balance driving off the 8th tee. I reckon the Strictly judges would have given it a SEVEN!!
On the podium today were the following:
1st Bill 37 points and closing on the Swindle leader
2nd Dennis 36 points including 24 points on the back 9
3rd Greg 35 points and beating Captain Kev on countback.
Interesting (if you are an anorak) facts of the day
No blobs Captain Kev and Greg
4 poInters Mike P (twice) Greg Henry Don John P Simon Dennis and Winesy
Best score on Par 3's Bill 11

The bare minimum of 7 players required for a swindle took to the course wondering whether the forecast of rain would spoil the mornings golf or not. Fortunately, it did not as we managed to get the full 18 holes in before the rain came.
The buggy trio of Sharpie, Joe and Robbo had a most enjoyable morning with the highlight being four pointers for Sharpie and Joe on the 17th.
It was good to see Dave C back in the swindle for the first time this year and we hope this will be the first of many appearances.
Top of the leaderboard was Bob P with a very impressive 39 points( £5 and cut 2) and runner up was Gordon with 35 points which included 2 birdies( £2 and cut 1).

Another blisteringly hot day was enjoyed by the 13 Seniors partaking in the Swindle today. However, that number could just as easily have been 12 or 14 .To say Robbo had an absolute Tilbury was an understatement. Firstly, when John C made a late request to play he told him there were 12 playing and John very magnanimously said he would leave it so that we could have 3 fourballs. Secondly when it came to the draw there were 13 balls in the bag. Robbo had forgotten to include Joe on his list. Joe was not down on the playlist on the website but, following the debacle with buggies on Monday, had whatsapped Robbo to ask him to put him on the list for Wednesday. If John C had known that he would have played making it 14 players!!!! No surprise then that the draw was a complete shambles. However, you will be pleased to read that we did eventually get out and the usual mixed bag of scores were recorded.
The whole ethos of the Swindle is to have fun with a healthy element of competition. If it all worked perfectly every player would finish at the end of the year winning exactly the same amount of money that they had lost. Of course, it never does work out like that but generally no one makes or loses a fortune. With that in mind it was great to see Sharpie pick up some prize money for the first time this year. Of all the regular Swindlers that leaves only one person who is yet to do so. You just can't keep him out of the spotlight. That man is no other than the king of writing "short" e mails/ whatsapp posts who describes himself as never hiding behind any cloak of anonymity. Hopefully you will be signing up to play in the swindle over the next couple of weeks Roger to address the situation.
Todays winners were as follows
Gold Ian H 41 points £7
Silver Greg 40 points £4
Bronze Sharpie 37 points £2

Following a few late cry offs 13 Seniors set out on a beautiful sunny day hoping to get a podium finish and, at the same time, bolstering their bank balance. As is the norm these days you needed to get more than 40 points to do so. Achieving that feat in grand style was Don with a fantastic 46 points ( £7 and a cut of 4 courtesy of getting 42 points or more for the first time this year.) In his own words "That was my best round for over 2 years " saw Joe take second place with a very impressive 43 points (£4 and cut 3 - also his first score of 42 points or more this year) Making up the top 3 was Ray with an impressive 41 points. Look out for these three in the Seniors Championships on Monday!!!!

15 swindlers today which included Sharpie and John C. who played the summer doubles final against Roger T & JP.

The man came good with 18 points on the front 9 and a sparkling 25 points on the back 9. including three 4 pointers. Well done H.

15 swindlers and a guest( many of you will remember Bob Doe) congregated in the clubhouse on a beautiful day for playing golf . It appears that the later you arrive the more likely it is that your ball will come out of the bag early when the draw takes place. That was certainly the case for Ash and Roger but it didn't necessarily appear to be much of an advantage( see today's results)
The scores were generally quite impressive and we thought that the winner and runner up had to be decided on countback with both Kim and Chris having scored 40 points. Kim had 22 points on the back 9 whist Chris had 21 points so Kim took top spot and Chris took second place. Or so we thought. Shortly after I got home I received a whatsapp message from Kim saying that he may have played off the wrong handicap. Upon checking he had indeed played off the wrong handicap- 17 instead of 19. However, it did not affect the result as he actually scored 42 points and not 40 points. Honesty is always the best policy and Kim is now rewarded with a 4 point cut instead of a 3 point one courtesy of scoring 42points!!!! Captain Kev took 3rd place with a fine 39 points

Summer continued at WP today - the kind of weather that you don't mind getting up bright and early. That is unless your name is Ash!!! Received a message from him whilst just about to do the draw asking if he could go out in the last fourball as had just got up!!!
Having kindly agreed to his request, 15 of us set off to the Wishing Well to play the course back to front as work was being done to the front nine. Playing the back nine first is not favoured by most people but, as you can see from the scores, Les and Belly didn't seem to mind too much!! No one was quite sure what the reason behind Les's brilliant 25 points was although it was generally agreed that the phrase "Beware the injured golfer" had something to do with it. Whilst minding his own business waiting or one of his playing partners to play their shot he suddenly felt the full force of a golf ball crash into his shin. Andy S was temporarily mortified but, having found out that a hospital visit was not required, soon regained his composure, found his ball and played his next shot. He didn't even notice that all three of his playing partners were at least 10 yards behind him!!
And so to the results. All three prize winners today had the digit 4 at the beginning of their score
3rd place Belly 40 points Cut 1
2nd place Les 42 points Cut 3
1st place Ken 43 points Cut 9
This may well be the largest ever cut in Swindle history. Maybe Dennis might have something to say about that!!

Summer returned to Warley Park today and the forecast is good for the next few days so hopefully we can continue with the shorts and the waterproofs and umbrellas can remain in the boot of the car.
19 hopefuls set out to bag some prize money but for many by the time they had got to the 7th tee their dreams had already been shattered. Yet again the Amen Corner curse had struck! However, he might not have won today, but you can't keep Ken out of the limelight completely as he scored the most points on these three notorious holes - a very creditable 7 points.
Top of the pile today was Ray with a marvellous 42 points which included a blob and a back nine of 25 points. Very well played Ray (£10 and cut 6!) Not far behind was Richard F with a fine 40 points (£6 and cut 2) and in third place was the ever-consistent Greg with 39 points, which included a back nine of 24 points which equates to a gross level par of 35 shots (£3 and cut 1).

On a surprisingly pleasant Monday morning 10 seniors arrived to play the swindle. Two had been dropped to the substitutes bench for the Romford match and three were late entrants on Sunday afternoon after storm Antoni blew out and the sun came out.
We had to start on the 10th hole which is not the preferred option of many but certainly didn’t affect Rex or Ivan, who stormed round to both score 41 leaving all others in their wake. Rex pipped Ivan on back 9 - well done both. For once I agreed to organise the swindle after formal written instructions from Gordon (the money list) and Graham (what needs to reported - make sure you include handicaps - write neatly - mark in a red pen if you make a mistake). I even wrote a list on Monday night and marked the register bang on 7.40am.
I can also report that after 1 year and 13 days campaigning there is now a drop zone on the 8th but also we had some GUR areas marked. It was presumably for the club championship but let’s hope this carries on. I thought the course looked good and clean. As for my group I was with Kevin B and Tim. Tim used to work in bathroom accessories distribution and Kevin was a plumber so active conversation about ceramics was order of the day. Lastly, I mention Chris who had a 3rd place finish and told me of his efforts to organise guest day. If I could sum it up - it’s hard work so please answer his requests for teams and guests promptly. Thanks for organising it Chris.

I expect that everyone due to play golf this morning thought that there was absolutely no chance when they saw the weather forecast for the day - rain and thunderstorms all day with the exception of a couple of hours mid morning. As we all drove to the club in quite heavy rain our thoughts turned to having a coffee and a chat before turning around and driving home again. Ash actually decided not to even bother as in his words.
The chat then turned to how many others wouldn't bother either, but we all should have realised that Warley Park Seniors don't let a few spots of rain deter them. True to form everyone else arrived in time for the draw. And so after a bit of 'will I won't I play' from Bob P, 3 three balls and a fourball set off praying that the forecast would be wrong. Amazingly, with the exception of a couple of holes on the front nine, there was no further rain.
Some coped better than others with the conditions (as you can see from the results) but head and shoulders above everyone else was John P who, in his words, just had one of those days and scored a magnificent 44 points- a full 8 points better than anyone else. His reward was to receive £8 and a 6 point cut!
It also moves him into second place, behind Ken, for the number of times a player has scored 42 points or more. Watch out John - any more and the B word will start to be mentioned!!
Second and third place was decided on countback with both Dennis and Dave S scoring 36 points. Dennis seems to be getting some form back and picked some prize money for the third time in the past four swindles by getting 21 points on the back nine as opposed to Dave's 18.
At the other end of the table Bob P (who Bill and I played with) was concerned that he was heading for the lowest front 9 and lowest overall round score after walking off the 8th hole with 6 points. Yè of little faith Bob!!! With a 2 pointer on the 9th and a blinding 12 points on the back nine there was no need to worry on either score.
I wont divulge who holds those particular records, but you know who you are!!!

14 swindlers resulting in 2 three balls & 2 four balls. The draw was interesting with Don, Dennis ,Kim coming out first followed by Bill, Sharpie and a coloured ball with an R on it. Any takers ? No ... So the remaining eight balls were drawn and allocated. Back to the R ball " oh I think that must be mine then " another seniors moment Mr. Stephenson.. ?
Back to the golf. A pleasant morning with all groups getting round quickly. We had a good four ball with Simon & Tim beating Spiggy & myself. Nice to see Tim back and picking up a few points. Well done to Richard S (who obviously used his lucky R ball) with a winning score of 41, and to Kim & Dennis closely behind on 40 points.

With last minute entries from Steve A and Bob B the minimum of 7 required for a swindle was achieved.
A most enjoyable morning of golf followed although the scores weren't anything to write home about.
After a lean period in the past few weeks Dennis was back in the money(£5) with his 36 points.
Bob P took second place (£2) on count-back from Steve A.

There were quite a few tired Seniors in the clubhouse this morning as many of them had played more golf than usual his week. However, it didn't seem to affect the scoring much.
Looking down on everyone else today was Bill who scored a magnificent 44 points - 7 pars and 26 points on the back 9 (£9 and cut 5). In second place was Dave S with a very impressive 38 points (£5 and cut 2), and making up the top 3, was Spiggy with 37 points, playing his last of 4 rounds off 13 (£3 and the honour of playing his next four rounds off 12)!!

Nine swindlers arrived to a drizzle and overcast morning. The draw took place with Ray, Kim, Henry out first followed by Greg, Dave S. Richard F. then Bill, Joe, Kevin B.
The course was looking very good and continues to improve. In fact we were greeted on the 7th green by a cascade of water from all the sprinklers. We managed to putt out and avoid a soaking not realising one of them swivelled and sprayed all of us as we crossed to the 8th tee box. Luckily the sun was shining and we soon dried out. Gentleman Kim then had a quiet word with the ground staff and the taps were turned off.
Some good scores, Dave S. 39, & Bill 40. But the honours go to Joe for second place with 43 points, and the overall winner Ray with 46 points (with 8 pars and a birdie).

A smaller field than of late congregated bright and early in the clubhouse ready to take on the challenges of the Warley course. The reduced numbers were due to a combination of factors - mixed golf, illness, injuries and the disappointing weather forecast. In the end three fourballs set off in gloomy but dry conditions hoping that the rain wouldn't arrive. Sadly, as we all headed for the back nine, it did.
However, there was very little sign of the weather affecting the scoring - with one exception. Poor Ian H just couldn't get his game working and retired at the half way stage. At the other end of the scale there was Ray whose round of 45 points included an eagle on 11 and a birdie on 17- both for 5 points. Throw in six pars (all for 3 points) and you won't be surprised to read that he was head and shoulders above everyone else in the field. Playing in the same fourball were Richard S and Bill who both scored an impressive 40 points with Richard just pipping Bill to second place on countback (22 to 19).
With a possible 43 more swindles this year Ken(£23) Ash(£20) and Don(£19) are looking down on everyone else.
In the other Swindle table (appearances) the following lead the way
Dennis 43 Ray 41 Robbo 38 Ash 35
Fingers crossed that the rain stays away next week so that we can all enjoy some fun golf with an element of healthy competition!!!!!!!!!!!!

We thought there was going to be a possible 20 for this morning's Swindle. By 7 a.m. that number was down to 19 as Captain Kev pulled out to cover for Gordon (extremely painful shoulder) in the Senior Pairs at Benton Hall. Brian and Joe decided not to join the Swindle and concentrate solely on their Singles Knock out match so down to 17. By the time the draw was done the number was down to 15 as there was no sign of Richards S or John N. Hope everything is ok guys.
It was good to see some Swindlers voluntarily putting cards in with a view to reducing their handicap although a little bird has informed me there are those that are doing it with a view to increasing their handicaps. Surely not I hear you cry!!
There is no doubt which group produced the story of the day this morning - the fourball of Don, Richard F, Kim and Mike T. Forgive me if it's the umpteenth time you have heard this but, if you bump into Don or Richard, I am sure it won't be the last. Suffice to say that it was a swindle first. Time to delete the next sentence. Kim and Mike!!!! In their match playing for the coffees Don and Richard won 10 and 8. However, the story didn't end there. You would expect Kim and Mike to be a bit shell shocked but to their eternal credit they comfortably beat their playing partners on the back 9- Kim 24 and Mike 20 to Richrd's 19 and Don's . Honours even I would suggest!!
Back to the results of the day where Robbo (40 points £8 Cut 3) just pipped Simon (39 points £5 Cut 2) into top spot. John P (39 points £2 Cut 1) could count himself extremely unlucky to lose on countback (22 points compared to Simon's 23)

After his excellent victory on Friday in the David Greene Cup, Ken showed no signs of letting up in today's Swindle as the following facts demonstrate. He is certainly in a rich vein of form and the rest of us need to up our games if we are to match him. Very well played Ken.
Best Front 9 Ken 21 points
Best Back 9 Ken 23 points
Best Overall Ken 44 points
Most points on Holes 4,5 and 6 Ken 9 points
Most 4 pointers Ken 4
Still there is room for improvement Ken - your round had 2 blobs!!!
Already playing off a cut there appears to be no stopping him. However, there is light at the end of the tunnel for everyone else. Today was his 5th score of 42 points or more and as a result he now has to cope with a further cut of 7 points and play off 25 - 11 shots below his course handicap!!!!.
Greg played his usual consistent round to score a very impressive 39 points off 13(£3 and cut 1)
Robbo pipped Mike P, Rex and Simon to get his £1 back.

A big field gathered in the clubhouse this morning eager to avoid being drawn out last and having to wait 40 minutes to tee off. So, it was bad luck for Gordon, Dennis, Paul and Winesy. I met up with Winesy on the 8th tee and he let me ko that he was struggling and sadly he had to retire shortly afterwards. Hopefully you will be fit for the competition on Friday Pete.
Despite the rain last night, the ball was still running well and that clearly contributed to the scoring, with ten players scoring 36 points or more. As well as playing in the swindle Ash and Dave H were playing in their Summer Singes match. It is often difficult to play Stableford and Matchplay cards at the same time and particularly when it comes to putting. What do you do if you have got putts to win the hole? Lag it up to gimme length and win the hole, or go for it to get the extra stableford point?
Well Dave and Ash had reached the 10th and that scenario arrived and Dave chose the former option. Having lagged up to eighteen inches Joe (who was playing with Ash and Dave) said "You can have that Dave" Dave promptly knocked his ball one handed three feet past the hole. It was this moment that Ash took his chance to behave like an Australian and said to Dave " I didn't give you that putt." Fortunately Ash behaved in the manner that the Australian cricket captain should have done, retracted his appeal and gave the hole to Dave!!!!!
The swindle honours of the day went to John N who scored an excellent 41 points (£11 and cut 3) to Ken with 40 points (£7 and cut 2) and to Captain Kev with 39 points (£4 and cut 1).

With it being a Seniors match away to The Warren it was yet another day when there was the bare minimum number for a Swindle to be played. The threeball of Dennis, Mike P and Paul J went out first followed by the fourball of Rex, Joe, Simon and myself. Once we had all teed off and headed for our balls the scene resembled a cross between the start of a Grand Prix and the start of the Wacky Races!!!!! All four of us were in buggies and vying to cross the bridge first.
Rex and I teamed up to take on Simon and Joe. As usual the front 9 proved difficult to score on and our match was nip and tuck. Joe made an outrageous up and down on the 7th to steal a half and at the half way stage Rex and I were clinging on to a lead.
However, the back 9 was a different story as Rex changed gear and produced his A game scoring 8 three pointers and 1 two pointer for a total of 26 points!!!
Robbo played steadily, had a good putting day and managed to keep out of the increasingly tall and thick rough to take first place with 42 points (£5 and cut 3) whilst Paul in his first swindle of the year was second with 38 point(£2 and cut 1).

Half way through the year.. A cooler, cloudy & breezy morning greeted the guys for a 07.40 start. 13 players in the " hat ". As Belly & John C. ( who also entered the swindle ) were playing their singles KO they went out in the first group with the two Kevins. Don, Kim & Ray followed in a three ball with two four balls after that. Don played excellent golf scoring 18 after 7 holes only to find bunkers and blob the 8th & 9th . He birded holes 7 & 11, and with 23 points on the back nine finished the winner on 41 points.
Well done to Simon who finished second and again picked up cash.
Third place went to our Captain Kev who wins £2. ( Kev, will give it to you on Monday, R ).

For the second time this week the Seniors had a friendly match, this time against Romford, and so Swindle numbers were also down. Nevertheless, the 8 Swindlers who did play were blessed with fantastic weather.
I played with Les against Ash and John N and we had a very pleasant morning. Our match was close all the way and eventually Les and I took the honours on the 16th.
Only two money winners today. In top spot, refreshed after his holiday, was Ken with a wonderful 41 points which included two Spaniards and only two blobs. Les pipped Robbo for second place. Both scored 39 points, both got 20 points on the back 9 and 14 points on the back 6, but Les got 6 points on the back 3 as opposed to Robbo's 5.

Having stayed up until 3 a.m. to watch a very exciting finish to the US Open I must admit to having been a little bit tired this morning. Maybe this was the reason that I forgot to put my clubs in the car but did put my trolley in - even though I was going to be using a buggy!! Fortunately, I had only got to the end of the road before I realised the error of my ways.
Due to the match against Top Meadow only a small field of 8 Seniors played in the Swindle today. It turned out to be a very close affair with 4 of the 8 players scoring 35 points. Not for the first time countback had to decide the money winners with Ivan(23) and Chris(19) just edging out Rex(18) and Joe(15) on back 9 points.

Having written a note about yesterday I got this from Robbo who had obviously arrived back from his exploits at Orsett far from exhausted and decided to write up a report anyway - so you have a two for one offer today!
As we approach the halfway stage in the race to become the Swindler of the Year it is becoming abundantly clear that it is going to be as close as it has been in past years. Currently of those that have played the requisite number of 15 rounds the top 4 are as follows
Ash +23, Henry, +15 Don, +14 Gordon, +13
However, there is still time for anyone who goes on a run of good form to overtake all of them.
Congratulations go to Richard F for his win on Wednesday(it is beginning to feel like every time he plays he picks up some prize money) and also to Les for his second place( he seems to be revelling in his new handicap) and finally to John who piked up some prize money for the first time (albeit only £1- it's a start John!!)"

Some regulars, incl. Robbo, were off to Orsett to play in a Gents (didn’t have to prove that obviously ! ) Open Comp today - suspect it was early prep for Friday’s big Charity bash. So just 12 Swindlers and one doubles KO playing at WP.
The course was looking well defined, with some greens beginning to ‘green up’ from watering. And of course another very hot morning.
The day’s scores ranged from 25 to 41, with Richard F coming out just on top with 41 points (I tried to think of another name for the well used 'bandit', but marauder or looter, seem a bit too strong? Discuss), from Les Polden’s 40, both well ahead of the pack. John Newman achieved the highlight of his week by taking 3rd place with 35 points and was thrilled to win back his £1 stake with no HC cut.
On a personal level I had 2 birdies, 5 pars, 5 bogeys and 6 blobs and 32 points. I can’t work out if games as evenly-inconsistent as that are mainly because of the course conditions, the impact of the hot weather, or just plain sloppiness! Probably the latter!!

Going away for 10 days seems to have done the trick weather wise. It was glorious last Wednesday and 24 Seniors enjoyed playing in conditions where you got plenty of roll on the ball if you kept it on the fairway. However, it was a different story if you ended up in the jungle style rough. It was almost impossible to get it out and the wise decision was to take a penalty two club lengths drop no nearer the hole to play your next shot away from the rough. The drawback was that if you were deep into the rough it would probably have taken two or three of these drops to get your ball back on the fairway!!
Scoring was better than of late and congratulations go to Mike P taking first place with his 39 points( £12 and cut 3) Henry as runner up with 38 points( £8 and cut 2) and Greg in third with 37 points (£4 and cut 1)

Another cold morning. 19 players were signed up, but only 18 balls went into the " hat ". As I anticipated a late turn up for the missing player, I went for a three ball followed by 4 four balls. Apologises to the last group which became a three ball due to the no show.
Again the rough off the fairways was brutal and from my experience (eight times I think); the bunkers were as bad. Dennis showed me a lot of sympathy every time I ventured into one. Especially on the last hole to decide our match. (I wasn't his partner obviously).
The lower scores reflect the difficult conditions with nine of us not reaching 30 points. Congratulations to Don with 38 points and first place and Simon, second with 36 points and ( i think ) his first money return this year. Also to Mike T for third place just in front of Les and Chris on count back.

Waking up to see there was overnight rain and a damp morning was a surprise. Once again a cold Easterly wind was blowing to make conditions difficult. Who would think it was the last day of May. Twelve Swindlers found their way to the clubhouse and the draw took place. As the swindlers are known for their good spirit we allowed the two single (knock out ) matches to tee off first.
Avoid the rough was the order of the day as being wet and thick it was going to be a card wrecker. Four hours later and we were all back in the clubhouse and a quick look at the scores showed they were better than Monday's. The first two places were very close and only count back ( 26 points v 23 points ) made the difference. Congratulations to Ian H , first place with 40 points and hard luck to Henry also 40 points.
Now I have to make a confession regarding third place. Having awarded third place to Kevin B. with 36 points I later realised he should have been playing off 15 and not 16 as entered on his card. This has now reduced his score to 35 points the same as Greg, who had a better back nine score. Therefore Kevin B. please pass your £1 " winnings to Greg " thanks.
Ian H. 40 points off 23 (course handicap, due to new card entered ) back 9 of 26, Cut 2 to 21, Won £7

Without doubt a day for shorts, but few had the confidence to arrive in them. But all 16 did arrive for golf on what turned out one of the best weather days for ……some time. More grass cutting was taking place on the course and the fairways are really beginning to look good. Certainly all round more playable as the scores would prove.
The two regular ‘just in time ‘ to arrive players, were pulled out to play first - that seems to happen a lot? I think we may have to start keeping ‘draw records sheet’ !
Dennis and I drew Henry and Richard F in our inter-swindle match. And it was a very enjoyable contest with neither pair ever being more than 1 up through to the final 18th hole when H&R secured a 2 hole win. I only mention the closeness of the match as it was rather was surprising, given Henry’s rather magnificent score.
When we came in Ash, from the 1st group, was looking rather confident sitting with 44 points and surely expecting to extend his swindle lead by some margin. But our 2nd group came in to reveal Henry’s herculean score of 46 with a back nine of 28!! And then the 3rd group arrived with Bill sporting another score of 44. Simon’s 40, good as it was, paled to relative insignificance, as did ‘due for a win’ Winesy, on 39. But Winesy did earn the ‘Vin de Dennis plat’ with an excellent par 3s total of 13 points.
Slight error on the day getting the two 44 back nine scores mixed up, but all resolved, resulting in Ash 2nd and Bill 3rd.
All 3 players had their first 42 or more scores this year and so earned themselves an extra one shot cut.
The next week should see the scoring remaining high?

And so it goes on and on and on. I refer to the great British weather. We are in the middle of May and today had to be one of the coldest and dullest days of the year to date. Throw in slow play, the rain, biting wind, extremely long wet grass off the fairway and you can understand why many who played today would not put it in their top 10 of the most enjoyable rounds they have played in!!!
Having said that it was wonderful to see Mike Pearce picking up his first lot of prize money this year in scoring 36 points. Well done Mike - £8 and a 3 point cut. In second place and beginning to have Ash looking over his shoulder was Gordon with 31 points - £5 and cut 2. Making up the top 3 was Spiggy- 30 points and cut 1.
You didn't need to be a rocket scientist to work out how difficult it was to play well today. When was the last time anyone scored 30 points and picked up some prize money?
Let's hope that a heatwave arrives next week!!

Lots of rain on Tues meant no buggies on the course for the Weds swindlers. Unfortunately, as a result both Robbo and Joe couldn't play, although they had arrived in good faith.
A few areas on the course had certainly given in to the very wet weather, but it was playable if you stayed out of the rough! Some of us didn't!
As Wilco was playing in one of the singles matches he decided to also play his 1st (?) swindle. We've been trying to get him to do that for some years. He says he may come back! We'll see!!
The scores in the swindle were, as you can see, very wide ranging (41 down to 16). None on the current top group managed to get in the prize money, so it allowed some other players to get up and join in, although Ash is still a another good wining pot ahead at this stage.
To the results. Dave S and Henry both came in with good 39s, but Dave had the BB9 to edge him out - £3 and a cut of 1. Bill probably got that extra putt on the course and came in with a very good 40 points to take 2nd with a cut of 2 for £6. And in 1st place was Don scoring an excellent 41 points playing off a cut of 4 at 28. Unfortunately that means another cut of 3 (for his £9 win) to take him to 22 (a cut of 10 overall). Should keep him quiet for a bit?
Not sure I should mention the scoring at the other end of the table, but hey it's Dennis - he won't mind! I did suggest to him afterwards that he was taking handicap protection to the ridiculous, but he did provide evidence of a very sore thumb causing him some distress; although he didn't offer any explanation about how it happened. Guesses on a postcard - remember those?

A toss up between a coronation street party and a round of golf at the home of Essex golf. For 15 Warley Park Seniors it was the simplest of choices to make.
It was great to welcome Rex for his first swindle of the year and we hope that this will be the first of many. Most of the early morning banter revolved around the fortunes of various different football clubs and it wouldn't be exaggerating too much to say that the majority of those in the clubhouse didn't have an awful lot of sympathy for either David de Gea or Manchester United.
Having been red carded from the Seniors Social WhatsApp group it was quite strange to see Ding Dong so quiet!!! Rest assured that it didn't last long as I can testify having been drawn out of the hat with him, Ken and Spiggy. On a more serious note we had a most enjoyable morning although our golf wasn't always of the highest quality. One thing that i can say is that we all tried our best with every shot. However, upon examining the cards afterwards it was brought to my attention that this was not the case for one particular gentleman. He was down as scoring 26 + 4 points with the additional 4 representing points for 4 ( possibly on purpose) missed putts of less than 18 inches to avoid a potential handicap cut!!! Surely not I hear everyone cry. The handicap police will certainly be watching as the gentleman in question plays his 4th round on a cut in his next swindle!!!
In the winners circle today were Ray, Robbo and Andy, who scored 38, 35 and 34 points respectively and receive cuts of 3,2 and 1.
A big field on Wednesday so look out for Ash and Gordon who are returning to their course handicaps and looking to increase their winnings and surge ahead in their quest to become the Swindler of the Year

Apparently Hertfordshire have extended winter rules until the end of May and Worcestershire are continuing to allow PWP everywhere. Here at Warley Park we have moved to Summer Rules and it certainly had a big effect on the scoring.
A relatively large field of 25 saw only 3 people scoring better than their handicap. Hopefully the new course manager will get the long grass cut down a bit to help us poor old Seniors! On a more positive note at long last you are beginning to get a bit of roll on the fairways which should be music to all our ears.
The 3 people who played better than their handicap all scored 37 points and so the places were decided on cutback on the back 9. Robbo got 22 points to take first place. Greg scored 19 points to take second place and Kevin scored 16 points to take third place. At the other end of the scoring poor old Ken showed us all what a funny game golf can be. Having consistently been scoring 40 points or more recently he came in with 9 points!! Still, look on the bright side Ken - at least you put a card in and that might just put your handicap up a bit!!
Guess what is likely to happen in the competition tomorrow?

Summer has finally arrived !! The 1st May saw buggies back on and Summer Rules instigated once more. Twelve people in total took part in the Swindle, although four of them also played in the club Bank Holiday competition at the same time. Although the condition of the course was marginally better than of late, you were certainly penalised heavily if you strayed off the the fairway as the grass was still quite long and wet. As with the competition last Friday only one person managed to play below their handicap. No one managed to acquire 18 points on the front nine and, yet again, there were no pars on Holes 4, 5, 6 and 9.
Congratulations go to Tim who finished top of the pile with 38 points and to Ray who was the runner up with 36 points.

With a Ladies - Seniors day taking place there was a small group for the swindle. Made smaller by Robbo having to drop out - hope you are recovering G.
Ray took on the days arrangements (thanks).
Dennis has been quiet lately - I've heard that he has been doing a lot of practising!
If he has, it helped today as he came in with a very good score of 39 points to take 1st place (£5) and secure a cut of 2 shots to take him him to 18 - to match me for the next game.
Don was 2nd with a good 35 points to take £2 and a cut of 1.

Having played in very difficult conditions on Wednesday it was no surprise that there was a high percentage of drop outs for the Swindle today. Only 11 braved the elements, but to be fair the course was considerably drier after two days without any rain. Despite the more favourable conditions, almost all of the scores recorded were quite ordinary.
There was, however, one exception. That man from way up in the north east of the country put the rest of us to shame with a brilliant 46 points. I played with him and Les and it was a pleasure to see him record his best ever score at Warley Park. After 9 holes Les and I were slightly concerned that our combined points total wouldn't match Ken's 25!!!!. With 28 we just crept past him! Only a lost ball on the 13th hole probably stopped him from getting the magic 50 points.
There has to repercusions for such a round and sadly for Ken it will be in the form of a 7 point cut (2 for winning, 4 for his fourth score of 42 points, or more, and a further one point for 45 points or more). Playing off 22 will be a challenge Ken, but I know you will enjoy it.
In second place, just nudging out Spiggy on countback, was the ever consistent Greg with an admirable 35 points.
The big question on everyone's lips is Will Summer arrive next week?
FIINGERS CROSSED!
NB Late News from an anonymous informer: "Don’t think it was mentioned when we got back to the clubhouse. Whilst playing the 4th hole Ash was in the trees on the right, and as he played his shot out, the ball came back and hit him on the head, luckily softly. He was all ok, until he realised it was a 2 shot penalty 😂"
Ed: Plus the loss of one dented ball I expect!

Changing of the clocks in late March/ early April usually heralds the beginning of Summer. Well, not this year. The course continues to be wet, muddy and frankly almost unplayable. The general consensus of opinion is that playing golf is very hard work at the moment and not much fun at the moment. However there is good news on the horizon. Next week the temperature is due to be around 17 degrees with very little rain. There is even talk that buggies may be allowed!!
As for the swindle a few people managed to tame the conditions and produce some very good scores. Congratulations go to Badger for his 38 points winning £10, Mike T for his 37 points winning £7 and to Ash for his 36 point winning £4.
Sadly for Badger he received news that his course handicap is not the 24 he has been plying off but instead is 17. This means that instead of getting cut 3 from 24 to play off 21 he will have to play off his newly judged handicap of 17!!
It's tough in the Warley Park Seniors Swindle!!!
You would have thought that a veteran of the swindle would have known that when you are on your 4th outing playing off a handicap cut of 5 that you make sure that you don't get in the prize money places. Well apparently not!!!! Ash you will now be playing off 12 for the next four outings - 7 shots below your course handicap. Enjoy!

Whilst the smart Seniors were enjoying a nice lie in, an enjoyable breakfast, and no doubt an afternoon watching the Masters, the more foolhardy of us were attempting to negotiate our way through the mud at Warley Park Golf Club. Actually it was very pleasant to wake up to a beautiful sunny morning and lets hope there are many more days like this in the near future.
Gordon Dennis Kev and Bill, decided to enter the Bank Holiday competition which let 8 to compete in the Swindle.
The early candidate for Bandit of the Year produced his third score of 42 points, or more, to take the honours, winning £5 and receiving a 5 point cut!! Well done Ken. Another fabulous score.
The runner up was Andy with a very impressive 38 points. He received £3 and a 1 point cut.

Spring had sprung - well a bit! The course was drying, a lot of mowing had been done and during the morning the sun came out. A good day for golf. And for some that was true.
A smooth draw, although Roger was yet again drawn in the last group. We didn’t even use his ball, so it must be a Roger thing! Hopefully, Robbo will bring him some luck next time!
It sounded as if it was a rather uneventful day with few stories, although Henry who was in our 4 ball did at one stage tried to mislay his trolly and clubs again, albeit briefly. I did notice however that he is getting far more cautious around water. I think he might need to sign up for some of Sir Simon’s therapy lessons, as he may be responsible for this added tension to Henry’s game.
One or two players at the bottom of today’s table might also need some of that therapy, when they see that John Powell’s back nine score of 27 was more than they recorded over the full 18 holes!
Anyway that 27 points contributed to John’s total winning score of a magnificent 43 points. That results in a cut of 3 + 1 for 42 or more points, plus another cut of 1 as he had recorded a 42 previously.
In 2nd place with 40 points was Gordon, who of course also had a magnificent round, didn’t you ! Yes I did, thank you! But only a cut of 2.
In 3rd place with an excellent 39 points was that occasional ‘marauder’ Kevin B, who is cut 1.
Robbo is back on Friday from the excitement and fun of Euro-disney - be prepared for the stories of wonder and amazement.

Apparently there is a heatwave coming over Easter. Well as far as I ,and no doubt many other too, are concerned it can't come soon enough! Numbers playing in the swindle are understandably down with only 11 braving the elements today.
When the balls were thrown up on the first tee this morning Dennis and Greg were drawn together to take on Badger and self for the coffees. As is often the case a titanic battle ensued and it was nip and tuck all the way round. Dennis and Greg eventually clinched victory on the 18th.
Having won the first of the Four Seasons competitions on Monday Dennis also took the individual honours today just edging out Bill (after both had scored 39 points) on countback with a better back 6. Gordon completed the top 3 with 38 points.

Yet again the Warley Park Seniors Swindlers managed to defeat the weather forecast and get in a rain free round - just!!! As the last group got into the car park to put their gear away the heavens opened and I understand those playing in the mixed golf got a little wet!
Despite the scores being extremely modest at best John Carter and I had a very close match against the Menace and Winesy, with the latter clinching victory on the 17th, courtesy of a lovely putt by Winesy, resulting in a Spaniard (4 for 4 for those who don't know)
Winners on the day were as follows:
1st Ken An excellent score - his second 42+ so Cut 2+2 (4) £7
2nd Greg As consistent as ever Cut 1 £4
3rd Ray Got his £1 back No Cut

I have to be perfectly honest when I say that those who decided not to play today made the correct decision. Whilst the fairways and greens were generally in fairly good condition some of the other areas(particularly those between tees and greens) were virtually unplayable.
The scores were understandably quite low even though we played pick, wipe and place everywhere. Some discussion took place between Gordon and myself whether that should include bunkers in the future. Watch this space!
Ash continued his good form for the year to take first place with a very good 36 points. Fortunately, for the rest of us he is off to Spain for a short break so someone else might have a chance of picking up some prize money. Gordon took second spot with 34 points and Vice Captain Mike beat Badger on countback (both scored 32 points) to finish in third place

A lovely windless morning for a change and everyone (18) turned up to play. After all the recent rain the lakes were full to the brim. Either that, or the levels have been raised through the number of balls going into them in the last few games; mostly Ken's I gather.
Things were close for 3rd place with Kev just nudging out Dave S ( Current Captain's like getting one over on immediate past Captains!). Kev's 34 was off 14 , 6 below his playing handicap, so it was a really good result.
John Powell was on his own with a strong 36 points to take 2nd place (Despite playing in a hat that had been stretched whilst holding 18 balls for the draw!).
But well out in front with an excellent 39 points to take first place was Ash the bash - I won't mention his trolley.
Our morning was brightened by the appearance of Tim, who brought some sartorial elegance by turning up in what appeared to be tennis gear- bringing some sunshine to our drab blacks and greys.

The coldest day of the year was reflected in the scores with only 2 players getting above 36 points. Both Spiggy and Dennis managed 37 points, with Spiggy taking top spot on countback. Making up the top three was Robbo with 35 points.
As the draw was about to be made the eagle eyed of you will have noticed there were 6 balls with Ken on them!!! Some kind person had given 5 balls (just in case he needed them) as a present to Ken. As I played in the fourball with him, Sharpie and Mike Pearce I can confirm that he did in fact need them as they had all been lost by the 8th hole. Fortunately, I recovered another 5 for him out of the pond.
Both Ken and Mike P raised their games on the back nine. Sharpie and I thought that we were sitting comfortably when we found ourselves 4 up with 4 to play. Not so!! Between them they got 4 for 4 on holes 15, 16 and 17 so we approached the last only one up. Fortunately for us they both hit their balls in the water leaving us to scrape home 1 up.

With sleet and snow forecast for next week there is no sign of the cold weather leaving us in the near future. So don't pack away the thermals just yet. Hopefully Don has got his new boiler installed and will be back with us again soon but in the meantime 19 swindlers gathered for the morning draw. Winesy and the returning John Clare requested to go out in the first group in order that they could get to Arsenal in time for their league match v Everton. By the time you read this you will know whether they have increased their lead over Man City in the Premier League table!
Back to the golf and after a relatively lean time of late Captain Kev pulled out all the stops and scored a fabulous 44 points to win the day.
In second place was Ray with a very good 39 points and completing the top three was Kim with 37 points. Interestingly all three were playing their last game on a cut.

A bitterly cold start to the swindle had everyone searching for extra layers, gloves and hand warmers. Things did improve after five or six holes but, for some, the damage was already done. The curse of the front nine had already struck!!
The course itself is definitely showing signs of improvement so hopefully the coming months will see handicaps rocketing down.
( as we often do) I feel it may be necessary for the handicap police to convene a meeting as soon as possible to address the possibility that a certain gentleman ( whose name begins with an A) needs a big cut!!!
On a more serious note huge congratulations go to Andy for a magnificent 44 points off a handicap of 29. A back 9 of 29 points including 7 pars was particularly impressive. His winnings of £10 was supplemented by a 4 point cut. In second place was Don with a more than acceptable 40 points( £6 and a 2 point cut) and in third was Robbo with 38 points( £3 and a 1 point cut)
If the course conditions remain the same we will be reverting to pick, wipe and place on the fairways in the Swindle next week.

It takes more than a dreary, dull grey day to put off the hardy Swindles and so 14 excited Seniors waited with baited breath to see who their playing partners would be when the draw took place. The odds of those using a buggy being drawn together were quite high but amazingly Joe's, Simon's and Sharpie's balls all came out together. Robbo's ball made up the fourball and he took the opportunity to hitch a ride.
Despite the drizzly conditions there was still some sparkling golf played. Richard F followed up his 44 points off 41 last Friday with a fantastic 42 points off 37, to win for the second swindle in a row. Cut 5 Richard. Let's see how he gets on when he plays next off 32!!!!
Second place appeared to go to Badger with 39 points, with John P taking third place with 38 points.
However, on checking the cards at home, a few mistakes with counting were found. As a result Badger's score was reduced from 39 points to 38 points, but still kept him in second place. Cut 2 Badger. John P's score was reduced from 38 points to 36 points, which relegated him from 3rd place to 5th place on countback. The good news for John is that this was his last outing on a cut and so he will be back to playing off 33 next time!!!
Mike T has now been elevated to 3rd place, just in front of Robbo on countback. Both got 36 points. Both got 21 points on the back 9. Both got 15 points on the back 6. Both got 7 points on the back 3. Both got 2 points on the back 1.You then have to look at who got the most points on the hardest Stroke Index hole. Mike got 5 for 3 on Stroke Index 1 whilst Robbo got 6 for1. The good news for Mike is that John owes him £2. The bad news is that he was playing his 4th round on a cut and so won't be going back to his course handicap!!!

It is always good to see the prize money spread around and today saw two first time 2023 winners. Richard F came in with a fantastic 44 points to take top spot, £10 and a 4 point cut. Les shot an equally impressive 38 points to take £6 and a 2 point cut. Bill, who has already won prize money on several occasions this year continued his run of good form to finish third and pick up £3 and a 1 point cut.
Our fourball of Ray ,Tim, John C and myself struggled to get to grips with the windy conditions and didn't score particularly well although Tim did have the best back nine score of the day - 24 points!!!!!! I know he won't mind me not mentioning his front nine score, but for those that are interested you can work it out by looking at the results of the day table.
Gordon happened to mention to me in the clubhouse before we set off to play that he was very pleased to score 41 points in the mixed yesterday and, with his wife Sue, took top spot. Today's score showed what a cruel game golf can be!!
I have been in contact with Richard F and, according to the handicap list on the website Richard has a course handicap off the whites ( thenew yellows) he should be playing off 41 giving him 44 points instead of 43.

20 booked in and 20 turned out. Rare these days. And yet another ‘bit slow to clear weather day’, but soon warm and dry - perhaps we can stay home in Feb in the future!
The pace of golf was also a bit slow again today. Can’t put a finger on why, but its definitely something to do with us !
A fair range of scores today, with Bob and I battling it out at the bottom (as a pair in our match with Ash and Simon) and some much more respectable scores at the top.
Coming in last and in my rush to sort out the winners and losers a faux pas was made that caused Ray to have a brief look of bewilderment. Announcing 2nd and 3rd place results as being a 36 point, BB9 battle between Mike Tringham (20) and Bill (21) and actually getting so far as handing them the dosh - a wrong result cheer went up and Ray's 37 points was brought to my notice ! So poor old Mike had his £3 winnings snatched back and handed to Bill, with Bill had his £5 snatched back and handed to Ray! Sorry chaps.
Anyway our winner on the day was new guy, Mike (Badger), playing his 1st formal swindle with an excellent 40 points playing off 22. The 22 was actually 2 less than his formal HC of 24, as he'd scored enough in his first outing to get cut with no payout! Wer'e mean are't we! Mind you it did save him from getting an extra cut of 1 today anyway for 42.
Well done guys - Badger might now be featuring in some of the short lists for Fantasy league choices before final submissions!

Robbo's back on Friday. 3 tough Scotland courses in three days, so he might be back, but not quite back!

Another enjoyable morning for 18 Swindlers. As of late it was cold and frosty for a few holes and then turned into a beautiful sunny morning - perfect conditions for winter golf. It was evident that you had to work hard for your points and this showed in the overall scores, with only one player getting over 36 points. It was also even more noticeable how much more difficult it is to score on the front nine than it is on the back nine. This is mainly due to the ball not travelling in the air so far in the conditions and also due to the lack of roll.
Fact of the Day 233 points scored on the front 9
307 points scored on the back 9
Congratulations go to Steve " Ding Dong" Bell, who was that one person to score more than 36 points. He actually scored a magnificent 40 points, which was 6 shots better than anyone else. Clearly playing off a dodgy handicap I hear you cry!! ! Seriously well played Steve. We look forward to seeing your next appearance in the Swindle - probably some time in July!!!
Captain Kev just took second place from Gordon on countback. Both players scored 34 points. It must be pointed out that this was the third swindle in a row that Gordon has picked up some prize money. Clearly he has to join Ash in challenging Dennis for the Swindler of the Year Cup.

The best laid plans!!
Having spent a lot of time on Tuesday evening planning to cope with the thick mist/fog that was due to be all over the South East of the country on Wednesday morning we awoke to find it cold, but with no sign of the aforementioned fog/mist.
With the draw due to take place half an hour later than usual it soon became obvious that things were not going to run smoothly. If you factor in Robbo having a list of 15 names, but with 18 balls in the draw bag, you can understand that chaos soon reigned supreme.
Somehow all 18 swindlers congregated at the first tee in groups of three, or four, and all got underway by 0840.
As previously mentioned, it was bitterly cold for the first three, or four, holes with frozen greens and ponds. One or two took advantage of the Barnes Wallace shot across the pond on the 4th hole, but others weren't quite so lucky and found a part of the pond that wasn't frozen.
It never ceases to amaze me how well people play in such difficult conditions and today was no exception.
Our fourball saw Ray and Dave up against Kim and myself, although to be truthful it was really Dave v Kim with Ray and myself in the category of "also played".
Winner on the day with a superb 41 points was Richard S. Both Kim (39 points) and Gordon(37 points) picked up prize money for the second swindle in a row, and must now be seriously considered (even at this early stage) as contenders for the Swindler of the Year trophy.

On the best day of the year weather wise the largest field of the year gathered in two time groups, with two draws taking place. With so many potential things likely to go wrong it seemed a recipe for disaster. However, everything seemed to run smoothly and an enjoyable morning was had by one and all. It was good to see Bob, Terry, Steve and Simon for their first swindle of the year. Several people also benefitted from buggies being allowed out on the course for the first time this year.
The course is certainly looking as good as I can remember for early February and with such good weather conditions high scores were expected. Twenty of the twenty six Swindlers scored 30, or mor,e points and nine scored 36, or more. \
Gordon came out on top with an excellent 42 points. This was only the third score of 42 points, or more, this year and earned Gordon an extra one point cut. However, he did receive the biggest pay out of the year (£13) which more than compensated for that. If you add on the fact that he came out on top in his battle with Dennis it was a thoroughly rewarding day for him. Dave S also scored extremely well and on most days would have come out on top with 41 points. His reward was £8 and a two point cut. Kim picked up some prize money (£5) for the first time this year and came in third place receiving aa one point cut.

The best day of the year weather wise saw 17 swindlers take on Warley 1 to 18 for the last time before the new stroke indexes on the front nine kick into action. I doubt very much that the new cards will be available on Wednesday so those doing the scoring will need to make the necessary adjustments.
As for today Dennis has obviously hit a fruitful period for form, coming in with another win in the swindle, and in doing so giving everyone fair warning that he is not going to relinquish his Swindler of the Year crown lightly. He just pipped ex captain Dave on countback after both scored impressive 38 points. Ash made up the top three with 37 points again needing countback to overcome Geordie Ken.

After the trials and tribulations of playing pick wipe and place on the fairway only in the Wisbey Cup on Monday the smiles returned on the faces of everyone when it was decided to play it everywhere again in the Swindle. This will be reviewed on a weekly basis.
With the weather picking up it was generally agreed that it was no longer necessary to wear four or five layers of clothing and that thermals could once again be put back in the cupboard for another year.
The improved weather saw the average score rise with Don taking first place with an excellent 40 points. Second place went to a rejuvenated John Carter with 38 points, or so we thought. Upon checking the cards it was discovered that he had in fact played off the wrong handicap and actually scored 37 points - the same score that Henry got in coming third. To make matters worse for John, Henry then took second place on countback !!!!

No snow. No sleet. No frost. No rain. No sun. Pretty run of the mill English winter day and pretty run of the mill describes much of the golf played!
Notable exceptions were Dennis and Ken. Back from his winter break in Gran Canaria Dennis wasted no time in returning to winning ways with a very good 38 points. True to form he told me in the car park after finishing his round that he left a few out there as well! Ken produced a more than acceptable 36 points to take second place and he did so losing the least number of balls in a round since joining the Seniors Section!! Signs of consistency methinks. A relatively low score (33 points) to pick up any prize money saw John Carter squeeze into third place.

As previously mentioned on numerous occasions the weather is always at the forefront of our minds and today was no exception. Although it was 5 degrees warmer at 0740 today than it was on Monday it felt 5 degrees colder. The usual late drop outs and last minute additions left us with 16 starters. Scoring was mixed, but there was no doubt who the star of the day was. John P had a fantastic day scoring a wonderful 43 points which included 12 points on Holes 7,8 and 9 alone. This was only the second score of 42 points or more this year. Vice Captain Mike came in second with an impressive 38 points and Dave H was third with a great score of 37 points given that he was playing off 5.
Silly facts of the day
Kim beat Dave O into 4th place by having a better back 1
43 points scored by 15 players on Hole ??? (Ed. Guess - it was missing)
15 points scored by 15 players on Hole 6
Only holes with no blobs - 3 an 18

In order to play good golf you need to be able to play a range of shots consistently well. Driving chipping and putting would certainly be high up on the list of those shots. This week we have all tried to master a new one. It is called the Barnes Wallace. When playing on frozen ground it is important to remember that approach shots to the green should land approximately 40 yards short of the putting surface in order for the ball to stay on the green. This does however give you a problem when playing the 8th hole as 40 yards short of the green is in the middle of the lake! Nevertheless our fourball of Kim, Winesy, Vice Mike and myself all took up the challenge. All managed to hit the lake and bounce over with Winesy coming away with the best result- a 3 for 4
Rumour has it that Bill knew that you had to try the Barnes Wallace shot, but cunningly decided not to tell his playing partners until they had all teed off!! Surely only a rumour. Bill got his par and his playing partners didn't.
Given the conditions the scores were pretty decent with Bill taking top spot with 37 points. Ash beware as Bill is coming for you!!! Second and third place had to be decided on countback with six people scoring 35 points. Robbo took second place and Ivan was third.

A number of late drop outs left the bare minimum of seven required for a swindle to take place. After the abundance of rain in the last week we were confronted with a different weather challenge - severe frost. Early chat in the clubhouse was all about how many degrees below zero it was and whether we should go out at all. Once again common sense failed to materialise !!
Captain Kev and Robbo both had equipment malfunctions due to frozen trolley parts, but nothing that a dose of brute force and hot water wouldn't fix.
Once the golf got underway it became patently obvious that it wasn't going to be easy to tame the rock hard greens. On the plus side the fairways were also rock hard and so players managed to get a bit more roll than of late.
The 8th hole proved to extremely entertaining in our group of Captain Kev, Dave O and myself. It was clearly obvious that if you drove the ball on to the green it just took a huge bounce and careered into the bush behind the green.
And so we all decided to try and hit the ball into the frozen water and bounce it on to the green. Kev and Dave did this perfectly and came away with (missing word PARS?)!
Not to be outdone in novelty golf play Robbo decided to leave his pitching wedge and putter by the side of the 14th and play the 15th without them. Having played his second to the back of the green he needed his putter, but chose to do a Bob Brookes and use his 8 iron and promptly put his ball straight into the hole for a welcome birdie. (ED note - surprised there is no mention of me 'running' 200-300 yards back on the 15th fairway to get them for him for the next hole! )
Winner on the day with a magnificent score of 39 points (he must have been practising in the Arctic) was Bill.
Runner up was Robbo with 36 points.
The forecast is much better for next week so hopefully we will have some decent turn outs.

It takes more than a little bit of snow, sleet and torrential rain to stop the intrepid golfers of the Warley Park Seniors Section going out and playing 18 holes!!!!
I would imagine that most courses in Essex would have been closed today and to be honest I was convinced Warley Park would be too. I only turned up today expecting to have a coffee and a chat before heading off to Sainsbury's to do the weekly shop. However, the rain miraculously stopped just before our first tee time and so 10 of us set off for the first tee.
Once again, considering the conditions, the scores were remarkably impressive. The top two places were extremely close. Both scored 34 points and so you have to feel sorry for someone who scored 23 points on the back 9 and lost on countback to another person scoring 23 points on the back 9!! Bad luck Captain Kev and congratulations to Gordon who had a better back 6. It's a long time since I have seen someone score 19 points on the back 6.
Geordie Ken came third with 33 points and really should have won easily. I said t was a long time since I saw someone score 16 points on the last 6 holes but I don't think I have ever seen someone score double the number of points on the front 9 that they got on the back 9. Somehow Ken got 22 points on the front 9 and 11 points on the back 9!!!! ( Ed note: And some of us saw the massive 260 plus plus drive (some claimed 300) he did on hole 10, then the 3 inch drive (and I do mean 3 inch) on hole 13 and then, more tricks, the amazing 18 inch backwards shot from a full out iron shot on the 16th! Pure entertainment!)
It just goes to show that the game of golf never ceases to amaze you.

Despite quite heavy rain on Thursday night the condition of the course on Friday was very similar to earlier in the week.
It was certainly hard work getting round, but 12 of the 13 starters managed to complete the full 18 holes. Unfortunately for Don he had to retire with a bad back half way through the back 9. Hopefully, he will be fighting fit again for the week ahead.
As for the golf itself Ash continued his excellent start to 2023 getting his third first place in five swindles with a very good 39 points off 12. If you factor in that he has been cut 9 shots from 18 to 9 during those swindles you can see exactly how well he has been playing. Ray was second with an equally good 38 points off 21 and Spiggy was third with 36 points off 14. Congratulations to all three.
Yet again Warley Park's Amen Corner (Holes 4, 5 and 6) proved to be the downfall of many. Of the 13 players only 39 points were scored on those holes which equates to an average of three points per person. The one person who didn't score a single point on any of the three holes shall remain nameless!!!

With yet more rain yesterday morning and evening a much depleted field of 13 braved the conditions and all managed to complete the 18 holes without any serious mishaps
We welcomed two new swindlers
Welcome to the Seniors Section.
As predicted on Monday the high scoring in extremely difficult conditions continued with Dave Oakley scoring a fantastic 41 points to win the day. The runner up was Bill who just pipped John P on countback.
We welcomed two new swindlers
- A new member Mike Pearce. The eagle eyed of you will notice not a new name as we already have a Mike Pearce!!
To avoid confusion Mike Pearce 2 will answer to Badger which is the nickname given to him when he worked in the City prior to retiring. Welcome Mike and well played today

I thought that the course was barely playable last week, but yesterday it was like playing in conditions resembling the Battle of the Somme! It never ceases to amaze me how, despite what weather obstacles are put in front of them, members of the Seniors Section find a way to produce such high scores.
As I write the rain is hammering down again and roads/ fields are becoming more and more flooded. Despite this the hardy Seniors will once again be taking on the course tomorrow and producing the usual high scores.
Back to yesterday where some of the mini highlights were:
Dave H scoring four consecutive birdies on holes 8, 9, 10 and 11 - a fabulous achievement especially when a high percentage of people don't get 4 birdies in a year!!!
Ex Captain Dave getting 24 points on the Back 9
Ash getting the only par on Hole 5
No blobs by anyone on Holes 11, 13 or 17.
As for the day's results Ash continued his early year form winning for the second swindle in a row with 41 points (winning £11) and will now be playing off 12 for the next four games. It was noted that he skillfully managed to avoid the extra one point cut for scoring 42 points!!! Henry managed to avoid falling in any ditches and secured second place with a very good 39 points.(£7) Ex captain Dave just nudged out Dennis to take 3rd place (£4) courtesy of his great back 9.

The 2023 swindle is now well and truly underway although question marks still remain as to whether we should be playing golf in such conditions. Having said that for many it was just nice to get out in the fresh air and walk off some of the turkey and Xmas puddding.
Our fourball enjoyed a very close little match, with Dennis and Kim just pipping Richard and myself. As always when playing with Dennis there was plenty of entertainment and the golf varied from the sublime to the ridiculous. As we approached the tee on Slippery we were all square. Dennis then sliced his drive right of the fairway bunker and into the rough stuff. Put me down for a four says Denniis. After almost giving it up as lost the ball was found (Ed. more than 3 mins I bet!) and yes you've guessed it - Dennis got his four and went one up. He followed his par with a fantastic drive up the 16th hole leaving himself 85 yards to the pin. Odds on another par on the cards, but we all know Dennis. His second shot reduced the distance to the hole to a mere 81 yards and Dennis complaining of a broken wrist!! Needless to say the possible par turned into an ugly seven.
Unperturbed he made a par on the 17th to clinch the match.
The podium places for the day were as follows:
1st Ash 41 points 2nd Don 39 points 3rd Greg 38 points
Congratulations to all three.
Let's hope for a rain free week next week:
Robbo

A few seniors had obviously cleaned their boots and didn't fancy doing it again in the same week, so a few drop outs. But 16 gathered. Winesy tried hard, but had arrived injured and had to retire. Hope all well Peter.
Something went wrong out there somewhere today - the impact of festivities had perhaps finally caught up, having to work through heavy ground, or ball finding skills were failing, or some had no diary commitments to meet, but it was a long slow round for some in the latter groups. The 1st group were in ages before the last. Let's all try and keep it moving quicker guys.
At some point in every Captain's year (I understand!) the 'shit hits the fan'. But I gather Kev decided to innovate (he said he would) on that and just get a seagull to drop in it straight on him! Ex Captain Dave practiced a reversal in roles by helping his former deputy to clean up the mess!
Henry managed to stay fully above ground today, but having recorded his exploits on social media a new following has grown up and today Club Vice Captain Steve A was observed practising sliding on his back around the course !
Anyway to come to the golf. Don just pipped Bill for 3rd place with 36 points BB9 (Cut 1), with new Comps Sec Ray taking 2nd place with a fine 37 (Cut 2) . Just retired Club Capt Dave H clearly managed his very few shots very well, coming in 1st with an excellent 38 points (Cut 3).
Scores pretty good considering conditions, although it was PWP everywhere.

First swindle day of 2023 and very wet underfoot, but dry and reasonably warm above. A baker's dozen had survived the pitfalls of New Year's Eve celebrations and turned up golf ready to go out. Robbo was off sunning himself in the Canary Islands - which seemed a good idea.
We have had all sorts of 'ball draw' issues, but the new trend for 2023 is to put your ball in the bag (without a name) and then wander off somewhere else, leaving us to work out who it might be. Tip for the Future - Not there you go out last.
2023 could be a very exciting year (by Seniors standards of course) with players trying out new techniques on the course.
Firstly, from hole one we found that Dennis had turned up with lots of energy and so rechristened him Spiggy 2, based on his keen interest in exploring ahead. Not terribly successful mind as you really need good eyesight to be successful.
Next up was again in our 4 ball ( Sharpie, Mark, Dennis and I). I was in the woods at Lock Spinney looking for Sharpie's 2nd ball, as he'd just found his first. On coming out I notice Mark holding his face and looking rather dazed. Sharpie had executed one of his low driving shots out of the trees only to find that Mark had taken over Dennis' scouting role ahead and had taken the shot full to the neck and chin area. Mark was in pain and Sharpie was mortified. Luckily no lasting damage and Mark took it very well. The internal match (Mark and Dennis v Sharpie and I) took on a new dimension in tactical terms.
And then we came across Henry who is obviously keen to expand his sports activities and take on a new challenge, despite Sir Simon giving him the Swim Coach role. I say 'sports', although I'm not sure that mud sliding has reached that stage of acceptance yet - but although he was well suited up it wont last long if he slides on his front too many times.
Anyway back to golf - Northern Ken came in with another of his handicap matching scores at 44 v 41. Less said the better, but he is cut 4 shots for 4 games. (NB we have yet to publish on 40 Plus changes for 2023 and so until then 2022 rules apply). Ken did donate his winnings to Kev's charity - he's trying hard to dispel the rumours about northern charity.
Well doEn Ken, we've all had a short period when getting back into or taking up golf, where we we had success so don't listen to them!
Oh yes and I picked up 2nd with a hard earned 39 points, (and getting in the 1st win in 2023 over Dennis in the Gor-Den stakes).
And Captain Kev looks as if he's trying to maintain ex Captain Dave's approach to his Captains Year by carrying on playing well and even trying to win things ( which as we all know is not really allowed!
Anyway a good start.
