This year the annual competition for the Past Captain's Cup took place on Friday 19th October. Due to the very wet start to the year meaning that postponed competitions were re scheduled for later in the year it was not easy to find a date to suit all the eligible personnel.
However, nine captains did meet up for coffee at 9.00 a.m. and, after the usual golf banter and stories of great successes over the years, made their way over to the 10th for the customary 9 hole competition. The weather was perfect for golf so good scores were expected!!!
As the morning progressed the competitive side of some started to kick in, whilst others were quietly going along picking up points here and there.
The moment of the day occurred in the Appleby, Hughes and Robson three ball. On Slippery, Alan had leaked his ball out to the right and into trouble. Simon's ball was on the crest of the hill in the centre of the fairway, whilst Robbo's was just in the semi rough on the left. Whilst looking for Alan's ball Robbo suddenly noticed Simon's trolley making its way down the hill towards the green. He kindly pointed this out to Simon (unfortunately part of post heart attack recovery does not include running after runaway trollies). So it was left to Simon to do his Usain impression. Sadly, the faster he ran the quicker the trolley went. He did eventually catch up with it when it disappeared and crashed over the back of the green. Something for the next Fantasy News methinks!!
As for the results of the competition there was only one winner. (see below)
Winner Peter Wines 23
Runner Up Graham Robson 20
Simon Hughes 19
Les Polden 19
Alan Appleby 18
Colin Anthony 17
Brian Elsworth 14
Roger Tallentire 14
George Fox 14
Congratulations to Peter on a fantastic score. As he has been saying to me for a while "I'll be back". And today he certainly was.
Everyone (with the exception of Roger who was going out later in the day) enjoyed a meal afterwards and chatted about how to get more captains to participate in the 2019 event.
